Waitress Says Prince Harry and Meghan Stormed Out of Restaurant When Told They Had to Wait for a Table
Less than a month after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the U.K., there’s talk that the Sussexes could be headed back to the U.S. as early as next month. But they may not receive the warmest welcome from their neighbors in Montecito as some recalled how they acted entitled when they were there.
One waitress at a restaurant in the affluent coastal community remembers that the prince and his wife angrily stormed out of the establishment when they were told they had to wait for a table.
That server told Express that Meghan and Harry walked into Montecito’s popular Honor Bar one day expecting to get a table and be seated right away because of who they were, but they were asked to add their names to a waiting list like the other customers.
“Everyone is treated the same here,” the waitress explained. “They got angry and said they shouldn’t have to wait. Then they left and never came back.”
The restaurant employee added that later during her shift, the duke and duchess ordered takeout and sent one of their staff members to go pick it up.
The waitress’s recollection echoes what some other residents have said about the Sussexes expecting to be treated a certain way, even though there are residents living in Montecito who are more famous and have more money than them.
A store employee at the Montecito Country Mart where Meghan visited on several occasions shared, “They’re the only celebrities here who go around with bodyguards. Other A-listers just as famous and likely richer than them walk around casually like any normal person.”
Mary Sheldon, a longtime resident of Montecito who owns a bookstore there, said that no one saw much of the ex-working royals around but noticed their security vans driving through the neighborhood.
“I think they’re basically ignored, and if people come across them that’s fine, but I don’t think the locals seek them out in any way,” Sheldon opined. “I have seen black SUVs on my road.”
Bruce Johnston, a former member of The Beach Boys who also lives near the duke and the former Suits star in Montecito, described Harry as a “jerk” and recalled seeing the couple in the town center when they were sitting in the back of a car.
“I was scared, however, when I saw their bodyguards with guns filling up their car with gas,” Johnston remembered.
Ciara Curtis, a local financial manager, added that Meghan and Harry had kept their distance from the wider community. She revealed that another neighbor named Susan sent them a bottle of local wine and a handwritten note shortly after they moved into the area, welcoming them. The unopened bottle and note were returned to Susan’s doorstep the following morning by Meghan and Harry’s security team.
According to Curtis, “They could have easily given away the bottle of wine to a member of their staff and written a two-paragraph ‘thank you’ note back to Susan. But the thoughtless act of brushing aside a small act of kindness set the tone for how they behaved and how they were perceived after that.”
As to why the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could be moving back to the U.S. so soon after arriving back in the U.K., the Daily Mail reported that if they don’t get the taxpayer-funded security they’ve been pushing for, they’ll likely move back to Montecito. The RAVEC is reviewing Harry and Meghan’s security matter, and a decision is expected “within weeks.”
