Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are going to get married; everyone in the world knows that at this point. What they don’t know is when the big day will come, and whether or not the duo has ironed out an ironclad prenuptial agreement just yet. While both Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are wealthy, they aren’t exactly on the same earnings level.  Swift is a billionaire, while Kelce has earned millions from his playing career. Has Swift always had more money, though? Kelce’s rookie year in the NFL did outearn Swift’s first year in the music business, but by the time he entered the NFL, she was already worth way more.

Travis Kelce signed a contract worth millions when he entered the NFL

Travis Kelce is in his 12th year with the NFL. In April 2024, he came to an agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs for a contract extension. According to ESPN, the star tight end will earn more than $34 million for two more years with the team. The number is pretty high. Still, Kelce, who is believed to have a net worth of around $100 million, took years to get to this point in his career. His rookie contract was decidedly more modest, but it was still pretty impressive for a 23-year-old.

When Kelce was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the NFL draft, he was thrilled. The rookie contract he signed was probably even more thrilling. According to several sources, the tight end signed a four-year deal worth $3.12 million. Spread out over four years, he made an average of $700,000 per year just from his on-the-field play. He did, however, admit he was far from responsible with that cash. In a podcast appearance, he once admitted that he had spent it all.

Taylor Swift’s first year earnings weren’t all that modest, either

Taylor Swift is a billionaire today, with estimates claiming her net worth is around $2 billion. It took her many years to work up to that, though. Swift became a household name in 2006 when she released her first album, Taylor Swift. While the album was commercially successful, selling over a million copies by the time it was available to the public for a year, she likely didn’t earn millions of dollars for it.

While her actual pay rate remains unknown, we can assume Swift likely earned around $500,000 and $1 million for her work on the album, based on the average royalty rate for an incoming music artist and the fees she had to pay out. Sure, such a figure is nothing compared to Swift’s current wealth, but it’s a pretty significant amount of money when you consider Swift was just 16 years old when the album debuted.

By the time Kelce hit the NFL, his fiancée was outearning him

While Kelce may have made slightly more during his first year in the NFL than Taylor Swift made during her debut year, she was already outearning him when he entered the league. Because Kelce played college football at a time when collegiate athletes were not allowed to be compensated, he earned nothing until 2013. She had already been in the music industry for seven years.

By the time he signed his NFL contract worth millions, Swift had already released four albums and performed three entire tours. While her exact net worth in 2013 isn’t known, there have been estimates. Digital Music News places her 2013 net worth at around $60 million. Other sources believe the Red Tour upped her net worth to around $100 million that year. All told, Taylor Swift had outpaced Travis Kelce in earnings many times over while he was still in college. That certainly doesn’t seem to be a source of contention between the pair, though.
