The Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) is one of the most stylish and fashionable women in the world. She has consistently made best-dressed lists and is responsible for what’s known as “The Kate Effect,” which benefits designers whose clothing she wears as it quickly sells out after she’s seen in it. But it’s not just her outfits that get so much attention.

People often talk about how gorgeous the princess’s hair always looks. And no matter the conditions, Kate has found a way to always pull off effortlessly-looking long flowy curls whenever she’s out and about.

For years, women all around the world have tried to recreate the princess’s loose waves, and now an expert is breaking down just how to do that.

How to create the Princess of Wales’ waves that always look good

“The key is movement, not volume,” hair, beauty, and wellbeing expert Danielle Louise explains about Kate’s do on the Fresha app. “[Kate’s] waves are loose and brushed through, not tight or overly styled. It gives that healthy, expensive finish without looking like she’s tried too hard.”

So just how can you create Kate’s signature waves at home?

Louise explains that copying the royal’s look as closely as possible will work best with long layers to keep movement through the lengths. First, blow-dry with a medium round brush focusing on shine rather than lift. Then, add loose bends with a wide-barrel tong and brush through. Finish with a lightweight shine spray, avoiding heavy oils at the root.

The expert adds, “Kate represents a shift away from excess. Women want to look put-together, not over-styled. Her look says confidence, not comparison — and that’s why it still feels so powerful.”

Louise also discussed how to pull off Kate’s day to night makeup look, sharing, “Her eye makeup is barely there, but it’s doing a lot of work. A soft brown smoky eye lifts the eyes without ageing them, and it works for daytime as well as evening.”

To create that, use a matte taupe or soft brown shadow blended close to the lash line. Avoid harsh eyeliner — definition should look diffused, not drawn on. Use just one coat of mascara to keep the lashes looking natural . And pair it with a light base and a soft rose lip.

The light lip is important in recreating Kate’s look because the Princess of Wales does not wear dark or bold shades. That makeup rule of wearing bright lip colors that really stand out is something the late Queen Elizabeth was a fan of. She was regularly photographed over the years wearing either a red or a dark pink-red lip and was famously crowned wearing Clarins cosmetics after commissioning the company to create a red shade of lipstick that went with her coronation robes. She also loved similar hues by Elizabeth Arden.

However, her granddaughter-in-law never adopted that rule. Even in the early days of her relationship with Prince William, Kate has always stuck with nude or light pink shades.
