Oprah Winfrey has, once again, quelled rumors that she and her longtime love, Stedman Graham, had split up. Winfrey quieted the rumors by stepping out with Stedman for the first time in seven years. The outing, at a Chicago-area eatery, happened to coincide with the 40th anniversary of The Oprah Winfrey Show. That might explain the calculated appearance. Oprah has previously discussed what stopped her from appearing publicly with Stedman. It wasn’t a split.

Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham have been a couple for years. As her fame rose, speculation around the romance spiraled. Each fresh outing together led to fresh speculation and, in some cases, allegations about the pair, so Oprah made a decision. She and her longtime partner opted to scale back their joint public appearances. Oprah once revealed, “Every time there’s a new photograph, there’s a new story.” Rather than feed that cycle, the couple simply opted to keep their relationship largely offscreen, making their rare public moments together, like this month’s reunion, feel especially significant.

Stedman long insisted he was supportive of Oprah’s career, but in 1997 told The New York Times that his goal was to maintain his own identity, despite his partner’s superstar status. The comment was met with ire by some fans.

Oprah Winfrey has made headlines for decades. Stedman Graham was right there beside her for most of it. The duo first met in 1986, while spending time with a mutual friend. At the time, Graham was in a relationship, and Oprah doubted he was interested. They eventually got together, and things moved along swimmingly.
The couple became engaged in October 1992, but the engagement quietly dissolved the following year. Oprah didn’t address it publicly right away, but the lack of a wedding led to plenty of questions. They were pictured together at the 1995 People’s Choice Awards, the 2002 Emmy Awards, and the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors, among other events over the years. Their last public appearance together before this year’s reunion came in October 2019, at the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. She spent many of the years in between being purposefully vague about their relationship status.
The duo never married. Years after the broken engagement, she explained the decision to remain unwed. In a 2020 essay for O magazine, Oprah said that she realized she wanted the feeling of being asked to marry, but not necessarily the compromises that would come with married life itself. She’s also recounted asking Graham directly what he thought would have happened had they gone through with the wedding. His answer, she’s said, was blunt: “We wouldn’t be together.” Instead, they’ve come up with a dynamic that works for them.
