Wiz Khalifa Faces 9 Months in Romanian Prison for Drug Possession

One year after his detainment and indictment for drug possession, rapper Wiz Khalifa received a prison sentence. During a performance at a music festival in Romania, Khalifa lit a joint while onstage. The country has strict drug laws, and Khalifa faced swift repercussions. Now, he could potentially spend time behind bars.

In 2024, Wiz Khalifa lit a joint onstage during a performance at the Beach, Please! music festival in Costinești. The Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism noted that the rapper was in possession of 18.53 grams of cannabis and “a cigarette that contained cannabis” (via Rolling Stone).

Officials arrested him, but released him shortly afterward. Marijuana remains illegal for recreational and medicinal use in Romania.

“Last nights show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage,” Khalifa posted. “They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”

Initially, Khalifa only faced a fine of approximately $690 USD. After an appeal, though, he received a nine-month prison sentence. 

While this sounds serious, Khalifa is currently residing in the United States. It is not clear if Romania will pursue extradition. At this point, it doesn’t seem all that likely that Khalifa will have to serve out his sentence in a Romanian prison.
