Yellowstone’s Future in Jeopardy? Taylor Sheridan’s Exit Sparks Fan Panic
Taylor Sheridan, the man behind the Yellowstone universe that has enchanted fans since its 2018 premiere, will be moving away from Paramount. The iconic actor, screenwriter, and producer has signed a new deal with NBCUniversal that will take him away from his long-term home with Paramount. The news has been met with trepidation by fans who are now concerned that the future of the Western drama Sheridan created, along with John Linson, is in jeopardy. They don’t need to worry about the fate of Yellowstone and its spinoffs right now.
Taylor Sheridan is winding down his exclusive deal with Paramount
Taylor Sheridan has developed a rich and beloved story with the Yellowstone universe over the last seven years. There is plenty more story to tell there, but it looks like Sheridan is up for a new challenge. According to the New York Times, Taylor Sheridan has signed a multi-year deal with NBCUniversal. The agreement includes the exclusive right to both new film and television content.
While NBCUniversal was motivated to bring Sheridan on board, they’ll need to wait a bit before he is exclusively involved with them. The TV deal is expected to kick in in 2028, when Sheridan’s commitment to Paramount ends. The film portion of the deal is expected to begin earlier. It is unclear exactly what the production giant has in mind. Still, insiders believe Sheridan might be looking to go in a different direction than his hit universe.
Before the blockbuster hit that is Yellowstone, Sheridan worked on films like Sicario, an action flick about drug cartels, and Hell or High Water, a movie centered around a bank heist. Sheridan has not mentioned which types of content move him more, or whether he plans to explore new genres.
‘Yellowstone’ will continue despite Taylor Sheridan’s new deal
While news that Taylor Sheridan would be exiting Paramount made fans of the Yellowstone universe nervous at first, they don’t have anything to worry about. At least, they don’t need to worry for the next few years. While Sheridan will be moving his new show ideas to NBCUniversal, the Yellowstone universe will continue as expected with Paramount. The franchise is entirely unaffected by the deal.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sheridan is still under contract to create content for Yellowstone until 2028. When that commitment ends, he won’t be taking the concept anywhere, either. At that time, Paramount will be able to either continue with the franchise or scrap it altogether. Sheridan and Linson created the show for Paramount, which owns the rights to it.
Sheridan will need to come up with something completely new for NBCUniversal. In some ways, the end of his relationship with Paramount could be a good thing. The actor-turned-screenwriter has developed some really amazing show and movie concepts, and we are sure he’s got something interesting up his sleeve.
At this time, there is no indication that Linson, who currently serves as an executive producer, is leaving the company. Assuming he stays, the world Yellowstone created will remain in good hands.
