Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik haven’t been together in years, but their relationship is back in the spotlight after he said he has never been in love. The former couple was together on and off for close to six years. Here’s a look back at their turbulent relationship.
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid started dating in 2015
Shortly after her split from Joe Jonas, Hadid was spotted out with another boy bander, Malik.
“It’s a very new thing. They’re just seeing where it goes,” a source told Us Weekly in November 2015.
“I wouldn’t call them boyfriend and girlfriend,” another source added. “But seeing each other? Definitely. He’s chuffed.”

After going Instagram official, Malik and Hadid took things a step further when she appeared in the video for his song “Pillow Talk.” The new couple made out in the video.
The couple attended the Met Gala together
In May 2016, Malik and Hadid made their first red carpet appearance as a couple at the Met Gala. She wore a metallic silver bodysuit and sheer gray gown, and he wore a suit with armor over his sleeves.
They temporarily separated in 2016
Just one month after the Met Gala, news broke that the couple had gone their separate ways. In a matter of days, though, they were back together.
“They broke up and got back together almost right away,” a friend told Us Weekly. “Right now, it’s back on, but it could be off again in an hour.”

In 2017, Hadid and Malik appeared on the cover of Vogue together wearing colorful suits. Hadid described the experience as “a dream.”
“It will forever be an honor to cover @voguemagazine .. but I felt extra grateful and proud to stand beside my [heart] @zayn!!” she wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.
He got her eyes tattooed on his chest
In January 2018, Hadid shared a video of Malik dancing on his birthday. Fans were quick to notice that the singer, who wore his shirt unbuttoned, had a tattoo of Hadid’s eyes on his chest.
They publicly announced their breakup in 2018 before getting back together
On March 13, 2018, both Malik and Hadid publicly revealed that they had broken up.
“Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend,” he wrote. “She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time … we love you all.”
Hadid left the door open for a potential reconciliation in her post.
“Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience over a few years … not only in the relationship, but in life in general,” she wrote. “I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will be.”
Roughly a month later, Malik and Hadid were spotted kissing. Malik appeared to confirm that they were back together in June.

In 2019, the pair decided to end things once again. A source said Hadid was exhausted by trying to help Malik navigate “a lot of his own issues.”
“She cut herself off from all her friends every time they were together,” a source told Us Weekly. “She focused all her time and energy on him, but it just got to be too much.”
They reunited in early 2020
After a year apart, during which time Hadid was linked to Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron, the couple got back together. Hadid posted a Valentine’s Day tribute to Malik in February.
They revealed that they were expecting a child together in April 2020
Several months after reuniting, Hadid and Malik announced that they were expecting a child together.
“Obviously, we wish they could’ve announced it on our own terms, but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well-wishes and support,” Hadid said on The Tonight Show.

The singer allegedly got in a physical altercation with Yolanda Hadid in 2021
In October 2021, news broke that Malik and Hadid’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, were in a physical altercation. Yolanda accused Malik of striking her, which he denied.
“I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private,” he told TMZ.
He received 360 days of probation and had to complete an anger management class and a domestic violence program.
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik broke up for a final time in 2021
One day after the report about Malik and Yolanda broke, the couple announced that they had broken up.
“They are not together right now,” a friend of Hadid told People, adding, “They are both good parents though. They co-parent. Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild. Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.”
They have co-parented their daughter since this final split.
He said he was never truly in love with her
Years after their breakup, Malik said that he didn’t think he’d ever been in love with Hadid.
“I don’t feel like it was love, and to be fair, just to say this on record, I will always love G, ’cause she’s the reason my child is, you know, on this earth and I have the utmost respect for her,” he said on the Call Her Daddy podcast. “I will always love her but I don’t know if I was ever in love with her.”
Hadid has not responded to his remarks.
