5 Great Movies You Need to See This Thanksgiving Weekend
We’re coming into Thanksgiving week. That means planning out your turkey, side dishes, and desserts, perfecting your holiday shopping list, and heading to a movie theater for some well-deserved escapism.
There’s something for everyone this year: a suspenseful drama, a heartwarming true story, a long-awaited sequel of a beloved animated favorite, and more.

‘Knives Out’
If you’re up for an Agatha Christie-style who-dun-it, Knives Out is for you. The Robinson family, already not on such great terms, reunite for the elderly patriarch’s birthday. Patriarch winds up dead. Detectives, played by Daniel Craig and Lakeith Stanfield, show up and the family makes it clear they’re not welcome. The cast also includes Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, and Christopher Plummer. Opens Nov. 27.
’21 Bridges’
Directed by Game of Thrones’ Brian Kirk, this film is about an NYPD detective, played by Chadwick Boseman as Andre Davis, who locks down Manhattan to find cop killers. Each moment of the movie finds Davis doubting himself: who is he really chasing and why? He eventually discovers the line between the good guys and bad guys isn’t all that clear. Opened Nov. 22.
‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’
This highly anticipated film allows us into gentle children’s program host Fred Rogers’ world for a little while. With Tom Hanks competently in the lead role, the film looks at Rogers’ friendship with Lloyd Vogel, portrayed by Matthew Rhys. Based on Rogers’ real-life friend, journalist Tom Jonud, Vogel eventually learns that Fred Rogers really is as kind as he seems.
Hanks told NPR this week how the two men met. “Other writers were getting [assigned] Gorbachev and Reagan and Muhammad Ali [for an Esquire series]. And [Jonud] got Fred Rogers — the short end of the stick. But what he found out later on … is that Fred picked him. . .Fred actually went against some people’s wishes. … and said, ‘no, I want him to be the guy who profiles me…’

‘Frozen 2’
This long-awaited animated sequel finally reveals where and how Elsa got her powers, transporting the characters to new places. You’ll encounter new friends, and old friends Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad are all here, too! Get ready to be uplifted with the new songs in this sequel. Opened Nov. 22.
‘Queen & Slim’
In this film, lead characters played by Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya get pulled over by police during their first date together. Things don’t go well, violence takes place (and is caught on video), and soon the couple makes a run for it. The video of the altercation goes viral and soon the nation is watching, polarized with both fear of, and sadness for, the pair. Opens Nov. 27.
