Trooping the Colour is the public birthday celebration in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. After celebrating privately on April 21, her actual birthday, the monarch and the rest of the royal family turn out for a big celebration in June when the weather is more fitting for a parade. Large crowds show up to witness royals riding in carriages, soldiers marching through the streets, and a flypast from the Royal Air Force.

Because of the royal family’s “no ring, no bring” rule, Meghan didn’t attend Trooping the Colour with Harry in 2017. After officially becoming the Duchess of Sussex in 2018 Meghan secured an invite to the festivities. Less than a month after her and Harry’s royal wedding she showed up to Trooping the Colour.

Riding in a carriage with Harry, her stepmother-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and sister-in-law Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, the world watched as Meghan made her first appearance at Trooping the Colour.

She received mixed reviews for her outfit choice. Meghan smiled and waved at well-wishers wearing an off-the-shoulder pale pink ensemble with a matching fascinator. Some argued the Duchess of Sussex’s exposed shoulders were inappropriate for the event because they went against royal protocol.

Will Meghan Markle attend Trooping the Colour in 2020?

Back in March 2020, rumors circulated the queen extended an invite to Meghan and Harry to attend Trooping the Colour despite their stepping back from life as senior royals. But only days later, Buckingham Palace released a statement saying the annual celebration will not go on as planned because of the coronavirus.

“In line with Government advice, it has been agreed that The Queen’s Birthday Parade, also known as Trooping the Colour, will not go ahead in its traditional form,” the statement read, according to Town and Country

But that doesn’t mean the royal family won’t somehow mark the occasion. “A number of other options are being considered, in line with relevant guidance.”

With Trooping the Colour coming up, we’ll have to wait and see how the royal family celebrates. Unfortunately, it won’t include the traditional photo opp on the balcony of Buckingham Palace or a parade.
