The Challenge is back with Total Madness, and we’re already seeing who’s aligning with who. So far, it looks like Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio and Wes Bergmann are teaming up in an attempt to get to the end. The two have been rivals for years and have never worked together before. But now, all eyes are on them to see if they can make their alliance work.

Devenanzio is one of the biggest names in the competition, and he’s won a number of Challenge seasons in the past. But one competitor on Total Madness just explained to the Challenge Mania podcast that Devenanzio tries to cheat. Here’s what he said.

Johnny ‘Bananas’ Devenanzio says competitors try to bend the rules on ‘The Challenge’

Rules are made to be broken, and that rings true for The Challenge. Like all reality TV, the show has plenty of rules the competitors are meant to follow. From how much alcohol they’re allowed to consume to what personal items they’re permitted to bring with them into the Challenge house, competitors are well-aware of what they’re allowed to have and not have. But Devenanzio said in the past that his fellow competitors try to get around the rules when they’re able.

Us Weekly notes Devenanzio said players were “hiding contraband in protein containers,” so the only workout supplements allowed “must be factory-sealed.” Derrick Kosinksi, another notable player on the show, said players would be fined $25,000 if they brought in a cellphone.

Competitors also have to sign a hefty nondisclosure agreement, too. Devenanzio said all calls to the outside world are “strictly monitored to prevent leaks.”

Rumors suggest Devenanzio has used performance enhancers to help him with the game

It looks like Devenanzio might like to bend the rules as well. Susie Meister, a previous competitor on the show, said a scandal occurred during Rivals III that led Devenanzio to win the big money.

Meister explained on The Brain Candy Podcast that part of the Rivals III finale involved staying up all night — and Devenanzio had Adderall to help him stay awake and get through it. “Everything for me changed when I found out that Johnny was caught with Adderall at the final,” Meister wrote. “A drug for which he did not have a prescription.”

It seems MTV knew about it, too — but there was little recourse. “After his win was announced, production confronted him and he admitted that it was his,” Meister went on. “He was fined $5,000. It was edited out and MTV has denied it. All the cast members at the final witnessed the confrontation, as did TJ, and it was filmed on camera in front of the production crew. … The two points John got by staying awake longer than Sarah gave him the win. He cheated his way to a win, got fined, and Sarah still got nothing.”

It looks like Rogan O’Connor may have just exposed Devenanzio as a cheater, too. O’Connor spoke on the Challenge Mania podcast about a challenge on Total Madness that he tried to bend the rules on. He said he tried to work with Wes Bergmann to win even though the rules stated it was to be completed individually.

O’Connor and Bergmann didn’t win despite their best efforts at cheating. And he then stated that he and Bergmann certainly weren’t the only ones with this plan.

“Johnny ‘Bananas,’ was one of the first things he ever said to me. And you’ll see him try and cheat in every one, but, if you get away with it, it’s not f*cking cheating,” O’Connor said.

O’Connor then went on to explain that he plans on continuing to bend the rules if it serves him well, so we can expect more potential foul play in the future. It seems he’s willing to take a page out of Devenanzio’s book to win the big money!
