ABC TV sitcom Abbott Elementary is seemingly on its way to becoming a hit, with the second episode marking the network’s strongest broadcast since Modern Family’s 2020 finale. The show usually releases its new episodes on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST, but creator, writer, and star Quinta Brunson revealed the workplace comedy is on a “hiatus.” On the upside, she also announced that fans could expect a 13-episode season. When does Abbott Elementary return with episode 10, and why is it not airing tonight?

Why ‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 1 Episode 10 is not airing tonight

The ABC mockumentary will not air in its usual 9 p.m. time slot on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Instead, the network will broadcast its coverage of the annual State of the Union address, delivered by President Joe Biden, and the Republic response given by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

The most recent installment of Abbott Elementary, episode 9’s “Step Class,” followed second-grade teacher Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and her after-school step class.

However, principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) eventually took over when the students expressed a preference for her. After changing the routine, the principal abandons the group shortly before their scheduled performance, upsetting Janine.

Additionally, substitute teacher Gregory (Tyler James Williams) feels left out and begins eating lunch in his car once his colleagues discover his rare aversion to pizza.

‘Abbott Elementary’ is scheduled to return on March 22

Following episode 9’s premiere, Brunson, who is also the creator, writer, and executive producer of the sitcom, thanked the viewers for tuning in.

She also updated them on the remaining episodes, explaining the mockumentary would take a three-week break. Therefore, Abbott Elementary Season 1 Episode 10 should return on March 22, 2022, at 9 p.m. Titled “Open House,” the next episode will likely follow the staff as they prepare for and execute an annual open house.

As Brunson didn’t indicate another scheduled break in her tweet, episode 11 drops on March 29, episode 12 on April 5, and episode 13, the finale titled “Zoo Balloon,” should air April 12.

In another tweet posted on Tuesday, March 1, the actor reminded her followers about the “hiatus” and posted behind-the-scenes footage of her “students” leaving for the day.

The cast of ‘Abbott Elementary’ includes Quinta Brunson and Janelle James

Partially based on Brunson’s mother’s 40 years of experience teaching in the Philadelphia public school district, Abbott Elementary follows a group of dedicated educators who try to help their students succeed despite their lack of resources.

Additionally, the creator paid homage to her favorite teacher and Philadelphia-born star Will Smith with the school’s name, Willard Abbott.

Brunson portrays bright-eyed second-teacher Janine Teagues, who admires veteran kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph).

A more experienced second-grade teacher with “sketchy” connections Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), supportive history teacher Jacob (Chris Perfetti), a substitute teacher who has a crush on Janine, Greg (Tyler James Williams), and the unqualified principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) also round out the cast. Abbott Elementary airs Tuesdays on ABC.
