‘Agents of SHIELD’ Fans Want Just 1 Reference to the Unforgettable FitzSimmons

With the latest Marvel shows on Disney+, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is only getting bigger, however, it’s getting smaller in other ways, too. Fans of Agents of SHIELD are well aware of how the show barely connects to the MCU, but many fans are hoping that’ll change.

Although Agents of SHIELD ended with its seventh season in 2020, fans are hopeful that the show’s characters will continue to exist in the MCU in some way. It’s not clear if Marvel will even do that, but what is clear is that Agents of SHIELD fans absolutely want FitzSimmons back. Here’s a look at why FitzSimmons is so unforgettable for so many Marvel fans.

What is FitzSimmons?

FitzSimmons is the name given to the relationship between two characters in the show, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. Both characters were introduced in season one, and it took a while before they officially became a pair. Their relationship developed as the show went on, and fortunately for fans, they do seem to get a happy ending as they retire from SHIELD together at the end of the show.

But, like Marvel fans on Reddit talked about, their relationship is arguably the core of the show. Sure, there are a lot of cool characters like Daisy Johnson or Phil Coulson, but fans just loved how FitzSimmons developed with the show. Indeed, one fan even went as far as to say that, “Fitz and Simmons are the best written romance in the MCU imo.”

One of the best things about FitzSimmons was that, unlike the superheroes in the cast or in the MCU in general, they’re not very super themselves. He’s an engineer, and she’s a biochemist, and they typically work in the background while the action heroes do the dirty work. As a result, they are the characters that a lot of fans can easily relate to.

On top of that, because it took them so long before they finally became a couple, a lot of fans could relate to each and every stage of their relationship. It didn’t matter what weird stuff was happening in the show, fans could always easily understand the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Fitz and Simmons.

Eventually of course, they choose to be with each other, and they even have a daughter together named Alya. With their love blossoming, they decide to retire from SHIELD. While this could be a good ending to FitzSimmons as is, fans don’t want it to stop there.

‘Agents of SHIELD’: How FitzSimmons could live on

Many fans are actually happy with that ending, as they love FitzSimmons and a happy ending is far better than a sad ending for them. However, many of those fans still want FitzSimmons to at least be referenced in the MCU in some way. Like one Marvel fan on Reddit said, “I get why they might not bring Fitzsimmons back into the MCU main canon but I would love a throwaway comment from Maria Hill or Fury referencing them.”

That simple gesture would be easy to do, if Marvel wanted to do it. However, other fans have another idea. Since Fitz and Simmons were both smart people who used their brains to solve huge problems, they could show up to support the other superheroes in their own way.

One idea that a fan on Reddit had involved a superhero needing some help, either medically or with some high-tech equipment.

Either way, that superhero simply shows up at a random house, and FitzSimmons answers the door. FitzSimmons helps them out, and the superhero goes on their way. This could be a great little moment for Agents of SHIELD fans, but again, Marvel hasn’t really decided about what’s going to happen with the show.
