Alaskan Bush People fans had a moment of panic on April 1. Series star Bear Brown took to social media to announce he was leaving the Discovery Channel series. But has Bear — whose beloved father Billy Brown died in February 2021 — really decided to leave the reality TV show that made his family famous?

Since 2014, Bear and his family have shared their lives in rural Alaska and Washington State with viewers. But it seemed that an era was coming to an end when Bear shared on Instagram that he was leaving the show.

“Due to recent events and things I can’t discuss on social media, it’s with a heavy heart, I’ve decided to no longer continue filming for Alaskan Bush People! It’s been a wild ride! God bless everyone!” he wrote.

Brown pulled an April Fools’ prank on ‘Alaskan Bush People’ fans

When Bear revealed he was quitting Alaskan Bush People, some of his followers assumed he was telling the truth. His father died suddenly of a seizure on Feb. 8, and it seemed plausible that Bear might have decided he no longer wanted to participate in filming after that event.

However, it turns out that Bear has no intention of leaving reality TV behind. In a follow-up post, he clarified that his big announcement was nothing more than an April Fools’ Day prank — something many fans suspected all along. He also apologized to any of his fans who thought the joke wasn’t that funny.

“Gotcha!!!! That was an April fools joke in bad taste!!! My apologies!” he wrote.

Bear went on to say that he planned to continue on Alaskan Bush People until he was an “old man.” He added that during a “rough” year, the show has been “one thing in my life that is definitely good.”

Bear made it clear he doesn’t plan on quitting his family’s reality show. However, it’s not yet clear when Alaskan Bush People will return to TV. The show’s 12th season wrapped up in October 2020, and Discovery Channel has not announced when — or if — Alaskan Bush People Season 13 might air.

However, the network did air a tribute to Billy Brown a few weeks after his death. The Feb. 28 special The Legacy of Billy Brown featured never-before-seen footage of Billy, as well as interviews with his children Ami, Bear, Bam Bam, Gabe, Noah, Bird, and Rain.

In the special, Bear reflected on his father and the time they spent together. “I will greatly miss the times we had, and the times we won’t have again. He will always be in my heart and I’ll always cherish those memories,” he said.
