One of the most popular movies of the early 2000s is Mamma Mia! Released in 2008, the jukebox musical rom-com was based on ABBA’s songs and featured an ensemble cast of stars, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Amanda Seyfried.

In 2018, a sequel film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, premiered. Most of the original cast returned for the sequel, including Seyfried. In the years since then, she has been vocal about her desire to make a third film in the franchise. Recently, Seyfried discussed how Mamma Mia 3 might still be possible.

Based on how fondly everyone involved in the making of the first two Mamma Mia! movies remembers the experience, it’s clear some wonderful memories were made. However, while rumors of a third Mamma Mia! film have swirled for several years, nothing has yet been confirmed.

In 2020, Seyfried said that all of the main cast, including superstar Meryl Streep, would be down to make a third movie. “Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other,” Seyfried told Collider. “That’s what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an island in Croatia?”

The actor even noted she believes the sequel film was better than the first since it gave the storyline something “to grow on.” Even ABBA band member Björn Ulvaeus said in 2019 that he’s not averse to working on a third Mamma Mia! movie. He told Magic Radio, “If someone comes up with an idea for Mamma Mia! 3, you know I’ll have a look at it. “We’ll have a look at it.”

Amanda Seyfried recently made a statement about a third ‘Mamma Mia!’ film

Seyfried and the rest of the cast might be on board to make a third Mamma Mia! film. But even she acknowledges that a lot of elements would have to fall into place. Recently, she opened up in a video shared on Variety‘s TikTok account. The 36-year-old noted, “Somebody’s gotta come up with an idea … I just don’t know where that idea goes.”

Seyfried joked, “The plot doesn’t even matter at this point. If ABBA’s got new songs, throw ’em in there, get the cast together again, Meryl absolutely comes back for the entirety of it…um, or else.” She admitted, “It’s very indulgent for us. We just want to go back to Greece and dance around.”

Interestingly enough, Seyfried’s comments about new songs from ABBA tie back to her 2020 Collider interview. She had pointed out that one of the big holdups to a third film was the fact that they had already used most of ABBA’s tunes in the first two films.

“But I’ll tell you what — I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and I hope I’m wrong again. I don’t think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie,” the actor told the publication.

Seyfried was an up-and-coming actor when she was cast in Mamma Mia! These days, she’s one of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Over the years, The Dropout star learned a lot about how to thrive, both as an actor and as a person.

As she told Variety, in a TikTok video shared on their channel, “I’ve learned what boundaries are, and I’ve learned how to say no, which is a big thing for me because I’m a yes-man and I’m always terrified of making people uncomfortable.”

For now, there’s no definitive news to share about a third Mamma Mia! film. But fans can rest assured that if the right opportunity arises, Seyfried and her former co-stars would jump at the chance to reprise their roles once again.
