August Alsina stepped in as his nieces’ legal guardian in 2018

Alsina knows all about experiencing trials and tribulations. Over the years, the singer has dealt with many tragic events, but the one he’s found to be the most life-changing was when he became the legal guardian of his three nieces’ Chaylin, 14, Amaiya, 13, and Kayden, 11 in 2018.

Alsina quickly stepping in to take care of the three girls after their mother Chandra — who had been engaged to the singer’s late brother Melvin — died from cancer on Christmas Day.

In 2019, Alsina explained to The Shade Room (via Madame Noire) why it was vital for him to become the girls’ guardian, saying he understands the importance of family having a support system.

“They call me Damy—it’s dad and mommy mixed together. And just the weight of that title alone—because I don’t have kids of my own,” he shared. “It makes me want to be what I know I need to be for them because I grew up with my father dead and having a strained relationship with my mother. To go through life without having a person you can run to, without having a certain type of foundation, so I’m saying all of that to say I am how I am. And I am how I am until I get to more of what I’m supposed to be.”

August Alsina says the Jada Pinkett Smith rumors started to affect his personal life

Now that he’s raising three young ladies, Alsina is adamant about making sure they are well taken care of and are always surrounded by positive role models.

While he left his “childish behavior” in the past once he became the girls’ guardian, Alsina claims his reputation was almost compromised after rumors of his alleged romance with Jada Pinkett Smith began to surface.

During a new interview with People, the “No Love” crooner said the ongoing romance rumors started to affect his personal and professional life, and because of that, he ultimately decided to come clean about the relationship.

“I never really cared about what people thought of me, but my personal life started to seep into my business life,” he says. “There were certain falsities about me, and it affected my business relationships.”

Alsina shared that he could no longer remain silent as he felt that keeping the details of his romance with Smith a secret was beginning to hurt his brand and his ability to care for his nieces.

Alsina only wants the best for his ‘naughters’

Now that he’s come clean about his relationship with Smith, Alsina is continuing to focus mainly on being his nieces’ biggest support system as they grow up.

“They are beautiful kids with beautiful energy,” Alsina told People. “I’m excited to see life unfold for them, and I want to be as present as I possibly can within their life while still being able to show them what it looks like to have a career.”

He added, “I’m striving to be an example for my ‘naughters.’ And I want them to know and trust that they’re going to be alright here with or without me, or without any man, without any woman, without any parent.”
