James Cameron has an impressive filmography that is about to get bigger with Avatar 2. The franchise originally started back with 2009’s first movie, but the sequel continued to get one delay after another. Disney is finally bringing Cameron’s Avatar 2 to the silver screen later this year and it has the potential to bring the director’s filmography full circle.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Disney featured a stunning look at Avatar 2 at CinemaCon. However, they finally gave an official title to Cameron’s movie – Avatar: The Way of Water. The showcase gave attendees 3D glasses to enjoy the teaser trailer.

Producer Jon Landau said, “We need to make sure [audiences] have an experience they can’t get anywhere else, and that needs to be exclusively in theaters.” The Avatar 2 teaser trailer will debut to the public before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starting on May 6.

Cameron’s Avatar 2 brings Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) back to the story. The story brings audiences ten years into the future with their family. However, there are new threats and they will need to work together to keep each other safe.

Why ‘Avatar 2’ could bring James Cameron’s filmography full circle

Cameron isn’t afraid to revisit franchises with sequels, such as Avatar 2. After all, his first feature-length movie was Piranha II: The Spawning.

However, audiences around the world teased the filmmaker over the last several years regarding his fantastical franchise. These are incredibly expensive movies and Hollywood insiders questioned whether audiences will care to return to this universe after so many years away from it.

It’s important to not forget the movies that Cameron brought before Avatar 2. He won all three of his Oscars for Titanic, but he also delivered some of the best sequels of all time that surpass the original. Cameron created Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which both exceed their predecessors.

If Avatar 2 is better than the 2009 original, then Cameron will secure yet another sequel that is better than the first installment. This will bring his filmography full circle. It will be difficult for any future filmmaker to beat him as the king of sequels that are superior to their predecessor.

Cameron still has a long path to go in this franchise after Avatar 2 because Disney will release another two sequels afterward. THR confirmed at CinemaCon that each installment will bring Worthington and Saldaña back, but that they are each stand-alone movies. However, they will connect into one “epic saga.”

Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 16. However, there will be two years in between each sequel moving forward. Avatar 3 is set for December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 for December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 for December 22, 2028. Audiences will have to wait to see if the box office will reflect if it was all worth the wait. Until then, the world has to trust Cameron with Avatar 2 and the remainder of the sequels.
