‘Avatar: The Way of Water’: First Trailer For James Cameron’s Sequel Debuts Online

It seems like forever since James Cameron first welcomed us to the world of Pandora in Avatar. Avatar 2 has been on the way for a while now and keeps getting constantly delayed. Finally, Avatar 2, now titled Avatar: The Way of Water, is set to come out this December, and Disney has shared the first trailer online.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is the second of five movies from James Cameron

It’s been almost 13 years since the first Avatar debuted in theaters and it still remains the highest-grossing movie of all time. Many fans of the first have been waiting for more in this world and this upcoming sequel won’t be the last. In fact, there will be a total of five total films in this franchise once Cameron is finished. 

Avatar: The Way of Water is continuing from where we left off with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who are now doing everything they can to protect their new family. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi will also be reprising their roles from the first movie. There are plenty of new cast members joining this sequel including Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, and Vin Diesel. 

First trailer for ‘Avatar 2’ teases underwater sequences

The first trailer for Avatar 2 debuted before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The trailer has now been shared online by Disney, allowing the few people who did not see Doctor Strange 2 to view it. While it doesn’t show many details regarding the story, the trailer does tease just how beautiful Cameron’s upcoming sequel is. 

Part of the reason why Avatar: The Way of Water has been taking so long is that Cameron has been experimenting with underwater motion capture technology. The brief footage of this shown here seems to prove that the director’s hard work has paid off as it looks impressive. Not only that, but the CGI on the Na’vi has been improved and there are many new locations and creatures being introduced. 

Also shown in the trailer is a new human character named Spider (Jack Champion), who is adopted by Jake and Neytiri. The Na’vi seem to be working more closely with the humans, even after humans almost destroyed their home in the last movie. There are a lot of questions introduced here waiting to be answered, but it all does look very pretty. 

When is ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ coming out?

Even with this trailer, we still have a decent wait until this movie comes out. Still, it is great to finally know that this movie is coming out as the constant delays have become a running joke within the film industry. 

Avatar 2 will arrive in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, with the following sequels coming out two years following. Avatar 3 is coming out on Dec. 20, 2024; 4 will debut on Dec. 18, 2026, and 5 will be released on Dec. 22, 2028.
