Avengers: Endgame was released in April 2019 and quickly became one of the biggest films of all time. With all the biggest stars of the Marvel Universe joining forces to create a story that was at once dramatic, funny, action-packed, and heartwrenching, it’s no wonder that it shot to the top of box-office charts and earned millions of dollars.

Even more inspiring than the on-screen action is the touching behind-the-scenes tales that the cast has slowly been revealing over the past couple of months. Tom Holland, the MCU’s Peter Parker, had an especially good story that he recently revealed while on the press tour for Spider-Man: Far From Home

‘Avengers: Endgame’ was a very secretive project

Avengers: Endgame is a major installment in Marvel’s Phase 3 storyline, tying up the tale of Thanos and the Infinity Stones. It is also the last film to feature Earth’s mightiest heroes, all together again for one last great adventure. With huge movie stars like Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Scarlett Johansson on board, the project was bound to be huge from the beginning.

The exact storyline was kept under wraps, and while fans speculated about what the film could be about, there were a number of surprises waiting when the film finally opened on April 26.

The biggest shocker was definitely the passing of Iron Man. Tony Stark, the genius billionaire who was a fan favorite for many, gave his own life to ensure that Thanos and his villainous counterparts don’t ever make a comeback. The emotional scene is considered by many to be the heart of the film, and one that, according to Tom Holland, was the scene that required the least amount of prior planning.

Robert Downey, Jr.’s big scene in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was improvised

In a recent interview, Holland revealed that Marvel executives gave the actors involved in Tony Stark’s death scene total creative freedom. Holland said that the actors were brought to set and told what was going to happen in the scene, and then the actors, including Holland, were allowed to improvise. Holland went on to say that, “it was a really interesting way to shoot such a pivotal scene, but it was amazing and the scene turned out to be fantastic.”

Needless to say, Holland is correct. Since release, Avengers: Endgame has received incredibly positive reviews, with critics and fans praising the creative direction of the film and the way the actors handled big emotional moments as well as action-packed battles.

What’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

With the conclusion of Phase 3, Marvel Studios has set their sights on Phase 4, which has not been officially titled as of yet. The only film definitely confirmed so far is the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, which will be released in July, although technically this one is still part of Phase 3.

However, a recent leak suggests a few of the films that fans might be able to anticipate over the next few years, including Guardians of the Galaxy 3, a Black Widow standalone film, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, and another Thor movie.

While these titles have not been confirmed by Marvel, it seems very likely that at least some of these movies will end up materializing, especially considering many of the established characters had open-ended storylines in Avengers: Endgame. No matter what the future holds for the beloved Avengers, it seems likely that fans will continue to look to Endgame as a stellar example of superhero storytelling.

As for Tom Holland, fans can see him reprising his role as Spider-Man when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 2.
