In Bachelor in Paradise Season 7 Episode 4, Mari told Kenny she wanted to remain open to dates in the future. That said, she hoped to continue working on their relationship. Mari also shared her feelings about Kenny with Demi.

Eventually, Kenny started something with Demi, and he kissed her on the beach. Then in the evening, Demi made Kenny a cake for his 40th birthday, which was spent alone quarantining for the show. She also set up a few decorations away from the beach, and the couple spent some alone time together.

Meanwhile, Mari took Demi’s cake for Kenny and immediately threw it into the fire. Mari also confronted Demi, revealing she was hurt because she confided in Demi earlier that day. Then Mari and Kenny had another conversation. But at the end of the night, Kenny told the Bachelor in Paradise cast that his relationship with Mari was over.

Mari Pepin-Solis says she threw the cake in the fire because of Demi Burnett, not Kenny Braasch

Many Bachelor in Paradise fans were confused by Mari’s reaction to Kenny and Demi’s relationship in season 7. Then Mari set the record straight on the cake incident in the Sept. 2 episode of Bachelor Nation’s Click Bait podcast.

“To be frank, the cake wasn’t me reacting to Kenny doing what he was doing,” Mari said. “I can’t be mad. He’s doing his thing. Sure, I was upset that it was right in front of me. Obviously, I didn’t like that, and I felt like that was very disrespectful. But to be honest, that whole entire thing was me being angry at Demi.”

Mari revealed she grew close with Demi while filming Bachelor in Paradise. The two reality stars also discussed Mari’s feelings for Kenny right before Demi started pursuing him on the show.

“We had an extensive conversation about my feelings towards Kenny and how difficult the situation was, how much I cared about him, and how much I wanted to be with him at the time,” Mari said. “She immediately turned around, and she went straight for him. So that’s why I was upset at the cake.”

Now, Demi’s betrayal isn’t the only reason why Mari threw Kenny’s cake in the fire on Bachelor in Paradise. Still speaking on the Click Bait podcast, Mari revealed that she was the one who originally planned the cake.

“Kenny’s 40th birthday, we were quarantining before we started filming. He spent it there, and I came up with the idea,” Mari said. “Because it was his birthday, I wanted to do a birthday party. I wanted to do a cake. I wanted to do something special for him for his birthday.”

Meanwhile, Mari pointed out that Demi could’ve been unaware of her idea. She also acknowledged that BIP producers probably set everything up. But ultimately, that’s why she threw the cake in the fire.

“Whether or not Demi knew this, obviously, there’s production and that element,’” Mari said. “But the whole thing was my idea. So to see her come down with the cake and do this whole birthday celebration that I wanted to do and I was planning to do, that is what sent me over the edge. That’s when I said, ‘Alright, this cake… in the fire.’”

She later added, “People think I was just being crazy and rageful and throwing a tantrum for no reason. … Yeah, in hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have thrown the cake. But that’s where that was coming from.”

However you feel about the cake situation, it’s clear that the Demi-Kenny-Mari love triangle has been quite the spectacle. So what happens next on BIP? We’ll just have to wait and see.
