Val Kilmer has had many interesting roles over the course of his career. He appeared in popular movies like Top Gun, Batman Forever, The Doors, and True Romance. He played Moses in both The Prince of Egypt and a stage musical called The Ten Commandments. Moses was a biblical prophet who received his calling from God when he saw an angel in a burning bush

This passage from the Book of Exodus isn’t too different from Kilmer’s personal life. Kilmer says he was visited by an angel when he was a young man. The angel Kilmer saw was very different from how angels are normally depicted in art.

Val Kilmer’s religion: Christian Science

Kilmer is a devout Christian Scientist. That is not to say he is a Christian and a scientist. Christian Science is a Christian denomination that was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in the United States in the 1870s. Christian Science deviates from most other Christian denominations in its view of Jesus Christ and its skepticism towards medicine.

Kilmer was introduced to Christian Science by his parents. Since then, he has been very interested in Eddy’s life and teachings. He even hopes to someday direct a film about Eddy meeting a contemporary author, Mark Twain. Kilmer has worked long and hard on the script. His script could certainly make for an interesting movie!

Kilmer isn’t just devout. He’s actually had a mystical experience. He says he once saw an angel when he was 24 years old. Shockingly, he says the angel looked rather like Darth Vader, the evil Sith lord from the Star Wars franchise, without a helmet. Kilmer says the angel reached into his heart and replaced it with a new one.

The Angel of Death is another figure from the Book of Exodus. He kills the firstborn sons of many Egyptians during one of the plagues of Egypt. The Abrahamic religions don’t really have a tradition about an “Angel of Life,” but it’s understandable why Kilmer used this term as he saw his angelic visitation as a very positive experience.

Kilmer wishes he had more to tell us about his mystical experience but he can’t. “I have nothing else to say about this, except that I am grateful for the new heart. It has served me well. And I’ve only just begun to use it.”

Kilmer has previously said the supernatural has played a role in his life. In 2017, he thanked the power of prayer for healing him of cancer. He also opened up about his understanding of Christian Science. He said “love” was at the center of the teachings of Christian Science’s founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

Kilmer also distanced himself from any religious extremists. “Sometimes people are surprisingly mean about this sort of talk. Maybe they mix it up in their minds with extremists…[That’s] not my sense of Christianity.” It seems Christian Science has been a very influential force in Kilmer’s life.
