Colin Macrae from Below Deck Sailing Yacht shared that he has recently gone five months without smoking cigarettes and celebrated on Instagram.

Macrae, along with other crew members were often seen taking smoke breaks. Sometimes those smoke breaks became a point of contention, especially during crew dinners. Macrae wasn’t involved in any “smoke break drama,” but seeing himself smoking on the show had a major impact. In fact, he made a conscious effort to never show himself smoking on his YouTube channel. Macrae’s Instagram post was met with a slew of positive remarks. This included crew like Dani Soares and Colin Macy-O’Toole from Below Deck Mediterranean who shared their support on Macrae’s post. Former chief stew Hannah Ferrier from Below Deck Med also commented and previously shared her own journey to quit smoking a few years ago.

‘Below Deck Sailing Yacht’ became a mirror for Colin Macrae

Other reality show cast members have shared that seeing their behavior on reality television prompted them to make changes. For Macrae, seeing himself taking smoke breaks, but also a fan reaction, inspired him to make big changes.

“Yesterday marked 5 months absolutely smoke free for me, after smoking for 19 years,” Macrae shared on Instagram along with a photo. “I made a New Years resolution this year to quit and be a better role model for kids, after seeing the disappointment of one of our fans walking down the road with their child, seeing me smoking. It was as though in one moment, all respect for me had been lost, and I understood why.”

“I have gone out of my way to never show any of us smoking on my YouTube channel, but to see it all over the television now on Below deck is more than a little shameful,” he continued. “But anyway, the important thing is that I have made the change after being a ‘pack a day’ smoker for so long, and no longer feel the need to put that shit into my body. For me, this is huge, and I’m proud of myself. Had my first cigarette at 11, was smoking habitually by 16, and I’m turning 36 this year. If you’re out there tryna give up the darts, stick it out for a month, and it will just get easier and easier, as you start to see it for the filthy worthless habit that it is. I promise.”

Below Deck Med’s Hannah Ferrier went smoke free and shared her journey

Ferrier responded to Macrae’s post. “Awesome!!!! Congrats,” she replied in the thread. “It’s been 14 months for me as well!!!!” She shared a glow up photo on Instagram in May 2019 and shared why she was looking so much healthier.
