The Marvel Cinematic Universe is diving deep into the multiverse in the Doctor Strange sequel. Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, join forces in Doctor Strange 2. The movie will undoubtedly change the course of the MCU forever, which is why Cumberbatch believes it has the capacity to be one of the grandest Marvel movies to date.

Benedict Cumberbatch teases the ambition of ‘Doctor Strange 2’

During an interview with Total Film, Benedict Cumberbatch previewed the scale of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

“It is madness, for sure, what happens in our film,” the actor explained. “It’s pretty full-on. And it’s big, man. It’s very, very ambitious. And if we bring it off, I think it could be one of the biggest [Marvel films] we’ve seen so far.”

Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange has to repair the destruction done to the multiverse. And that means that he will encounter many exciting heroes and villains along the way as he travels through universes.

So given its ambition and potential, it makes sense that Benedict Cumberbatch believes that Doctor Strange 2 could become the biggest Marvel movie ever made. However, only time will tell if his prediction is correct.

Benedict Cumberbatch believes ‘Doctor Strange 2’ could be as big as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

While speaking with Empire, Benedict Cumberbatch further advocated for his film by comparing Doctor Strange 2 to Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“[Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness] a big, big movie,” the actor claimed. “It’s going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home raked in over $1.8 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time. So Benedict Cumberbatch’s statement is bold, but it’s not unreasonable given what we know about Doctor Strange 2.

And the film’s synopsis reads, “Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”

The Doctor Strange sequel will take place following Spider-Man: No Way Home and WandaVision as Strange seeks out help from Wanda in patching up the multiverse.
