The most recently evicted houseguest, Christian Birkenberger, was backdoored as he didn’t have a chance to compete in Head of Household or Power of Veto. During his exit interview with host Julie Chen Moonves, he watched his goodbye messages following the televised broadcast for Big Brother 23 episode 16. After hearing what the other players had to say about him, Christian became emotional.

Derek Xiao backdoored Christian Birkenberger

After winning the staple endurance wall competition, Derek Xiao claimed Head of Household for Week 5. Already knowing he wanted to backdoor the most significant physical threat left in the competition, Christian Birkenberger, the HOH, put pawns on the block, Britni D’Angelo and Sarah Beth Steagall.

If nominations stayed the same, he preferred the latter go home. However, Christian was not picked for the Power of Veto competition, and Britni won, saving herself from the block. Therefore, with the support of several houseguests, Derek X. took the opportunity to backdoor his biggest competition left in the house.

Tiffany Mitchell tried to flip the votes for him to stay

As an ally of the HOH, Tiffany Mitchell initially planned to go along with the plan. However, she didn’t want Sarah Beth to make the jury phase and thought she threatened their game the most.

Therefore, she attempted to flip the votes to save him the day before eviction took place. After speaking to Derek X., who made it clear he wanted Christian to leave, Tiffany talked to Cookout ally Xavier Prather.

Knowing the former Kings (Xavier, Christian, and his showmance Alyssa Lopez) and her close ally Claire Rehfuss would vote for him to stay, she wanted to convince Britni. However, she showed up to talk with all the former Jokers’ (Azah Awasum and Derek Frazier), so Tiffany decided not to have the conversation.

Additionally, the majority of the Cookout alliance wanted the comp beast out of the house. Therefore, she voted with the rest of them, sending Christian home in a 7-2 vote.

Christian’s goodbye messages from a few of the houseguests

Following his televised interview with host Julie Chen Moonves, the most recently evicted houseguest watched his goodbye messages from the other players. Tiffany explained she tried to campaign for him to stay, but it didn’t work.

However, she claimed she still viewed him as a friend and wanted to hang out with him after the show. Additionally, Derek X. hoped to meet up in New York following the season but admitted he had to take the shot because Christian is “too good of a competitor.”

Xavier also congratulated his former teammate on his physical prowess, with Alyssa promising she would “take out” Derek X. the second she gets into power. Calling him her “person inside and outside of the house,” Alyssa noted she couldn’t wait to reunite with him on the finale night.

Following the videos, Christian teared up, emotionally explaining the messages “made me really happy” because he sees himself remaining friends with his former houseguests for a long time after the show. Big Brother 23 airs Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on CBS.
