Fans have been waiting for months for word on the fate of Black Summer. The Netflix apocalyptic drama, created by John Hyams and Karl Schaefer, follows a group of strangers navigating through a zombie-infested region to reach safety. It has a cast including Jaime King, Justin Chu Cary, Christine Lee, and Zoe Marlette and was spun off from the Syfy horror series Z Nation.

After a cliffhanger ending, viewers are eager to learn what happens next. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many updates since then, but it looks like an announcement on Black Summer Season 3 is on the way.

The purported Instagram page for the show posted a message about ‘Black Summer’ Season 3

According to the purported Instagram page for Black Summer, an announcement on the show’s third season is “coming” soon. The message came a few weeks ago in response to a fan asking for an update on Black Summer Season 3. A screenshot of the interaction was shared on Reddit, but it’s important to note that the account is unverified. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reached out to Netflix for comment on the validity of the page, but did not immediately hear back.

Nonetheless, it feels safe to assume that an update is, in fact, on the way, considering it’s almost been a year since the latest season. The wait has been interpreted by many viewers as a bad sign about the show’s future. However, not many realize that it actually took two years for Black Summer Season 2. Maybe that’s the case again this time.

Where the show left off

The latest season of Black Summer arrived in June of 2021, focusing on the characters dealing with new challenges at the onset of winter.

“The first season was very much about a mother trying to find her daughter,” King (Rose) noted to Entertainment Weekly. “This season, time has passed, things are way worse, and it’s an exploration of, how does she hold on to her daughter and keep her alive?”

“It’s also an explanation of trauma, of what happens in this apocalyptic world, and how people respond when dollars don’t matter, it’s just commodities: food, water, shelter,” King continued. “Then you have this other extraordinary character, which is the winter.”

In the end, there were only a handful of survivors left, but some people’s fates were not revealed. What happened to Rose in Black Summer? Where is Sun going in Black Summer? What about the others after that showdown at the hangar? Those are the questions the show will have to resolve if there’s a Black Summer Season 3.

Jaime King shared ideas for ‘Black Summer’ Season 3

King previously spoke to Express.co.uk about what she personally wants to see happen if the show continues for a third season.

“I have a few ideas,” King said. “I’m excited to get the writer’s room going again. This is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible.”

“What do you do when there are no more commodities left? Exploring that idea,” she added.

King shared more thoughts in another interview with Comic Book.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this. Hypothetically speaking, I would center it on different chapters, where we are exploring sort of three central figures in different places. But that’s just — I don’t know, sketches,” she teased.

In the meantime, check out the first two seasons of Black Summer now on Netflix.
