Blanche Devereaux From ‘the Golden Girls’ Was the Same Age as Carrie Bradshaw Will Be in the ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot

Carrie Bradshaw and Blanche Devereaux don't seem to have a lot in common. By the time the 'Sex and the City' reboot airs, they will, though. Carrie will be in her mid-50s when the reboot hits HBO Max. Believe it or not, Blanche was the same age when 'The Golden Girls' premiered in 1985, but things feel a lot different now.

Upon first glance, you wouldn’t think the Sex and the City characters and the characters from The Golden Girls would have much of anything in common. That would have been true if HBO Max hadn’t ordered a Sex and the City reboot. Now that And Just Like That…. seems to be months away from premiering, it’s becoming clear that everyone’s favorite pals do have something in common with The Golden Girls. Carrie Bradshaw will be the same age at the premiere of And Just Like That… as Blanche Devereaux was in the premiere episode of The Golden Girls.

How old will the ‘Sex and the City’ characters be in ‘And Just Like That..’?

Sex and the City was a show that didn’t pay much attention to the traditional calendar. The series never featured a holiday and rarely considered the seasons in their storylines. Still, it’s fairly easy to figure out how old Carrie and her buddies were. In fact, they explicitly stated their ages on more than one occasion.

Carrie was 32 at the start of Sex and the City. In season 6, she was 38 years old and questioning everything. The finale aired in 2004, and four years later, Sex and the City: The Movie was released. Carrie appeared to lose two years between the show’s finale and the movie, though. In the film, she’s referred to as the “40-year-old bride.” Technically, she should have been about 42 at the time. In And Just Like That…, Carrie should be somewhere between 52 and 54, so let’s split the difference and say she’s 53.

Miranda and Charlotte are around the same age as Carrie Bradshaw. In season 5, the gang heads to Atlantic City to celebrated Charlotte’s 36th birthday. That would mean she is the same age as Carrie, making her about 53 in the show’s anticipated reboot. In season 1, Miranda claimed to be thirty-something but didn’t reveal her actual age. In season 3, she gave it away. Following her breakup with Steve, Miranda complained that “a 34-year-old woman with a job and a great home because she’s single, is considered tragic.” Based on the statement, we can assume Miranda was 34 in 2000. Assuming Miranda was born in 1966, she will be 55 when And Just Like That… premieres.

Carrie Bradshaw will be the same age as Blanche Devereaux was in ‘The Golden Girls’

Carrie’s age range in the Sex and the City reboot puts her in the same age range as the characters in The Golden Girls, the 1980s sitcom that still has a cult following today. According to Parade, Blanche Devereaux never revealed her true age, but she did note that she was 17 in 1949. Simple math shows that when the series premiered in 1985, the character was 53. Rose Nylund was more forthcoming with her age. She was 55 when the series began, meaning Miranda will be the same age as Rose was in the series premiere of the reboot. Dorothy Zbornak never revealed her age, but fans assume she was also in her early or mid-50s.

The idea that Carrie, and by extension Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York, will be the same age as the characters in The Golden Girls is just a little mind-blowing. The 1980s were a very different time, and society viewed women in their 50s much differently. At that time, women in their 50s were looked at as being of retirement and grandparenting age. That is not the case anymore. Carrie and her pals would, presumably still rather be cocktailing and sample saling. Television shows are picking up on the trend. While Blanche and Carrie might, technically, be the same age in their respective shows, it seems unlikely that fans will be catching Carrie hanging out on a lanai anytime soon.

Blanche Devereaux technically had more in common with Samantha Jones, though

While Carrie will be the same age in the Sex and the City reboot as Blanche was in The Golden Girls, the two characters have little else in common. It’s much easier to see the personality traits that Blanche and Samantha Jones shared. Blanche and Samantha were both sexually liberated, and both seemed to use their sexuality as coping mechanisms. Blanche and Samantha were both completely against the aging process, too.

Here’s the interesting thing, though. If she were to appear in And Just Like That…, Samantha would be 63 years old. That would make her almost a full 10 years older than Blanche was when she began gracing the screen on The Golden Girls. The ever-youthful Samantha Jones would be about halfway between Blanche’s on-screen age and the age of Grace Hanson when Grace & Frankie began. Grace was said to be 72 when the series started, although she was actually several years older.

As it stands, Samantha will not appear in the upcoming HBO Max limited series. Some fans hope the door will be left open for Samantha to return, while others are convinced the character is being killed off. Kim Cattrall has made it abundantly clear that she has no interest in returning to the character that made her famous after a largely negative experience on the set.
