Lady Danbury cuts a formidable figure in Bridgerton. The sharp-tongued widow isn’t someone to be trifled with, and she doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind, especially when it comes to providing the younger generation with advice on love and marriage. But what was Lady Danbury like when she was was herself a young woman on London’s social scene? Viewers will find out in Netflix’s upcoming Bridgerton prequel series.

The ‘Bridgerton’ spinoff will focus on young Queen Charlotte, but also highlight Lady Danbury’s story

The still-untitled Bridgerton spinoff will focus on young Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio), who arrives in London to marry King George (Corey Mylchreest). Once in England, she discovers she wasn’t exactly what the royal family was expecting. As she learns to navigate her new world, she grows into a powerful monarch.

The limited series will also offer insight into Lady Danbury’s origin story. When Charlotte arrives, Agatha Danbury (Arsema Thomas) is living under the thumb of her much older husband, Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri). Agatha has a keen knowledge of London’s once-divided social scene and the intricacies of marriage, which she uses to help guide the new Queen – and to find her own way in society. She becomes a guiding light for Charlotte and develops a power of her own, evolving into the Lady Danbury fans will recognize from Bridgerton’s first two seasons.

Lady Danbury is her ‘own creation,’ Adjoa Andoh says

Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury in Bridgerton, recently reflected on how her character’s past might have shaped who she is today. Andoh will also appear as Lady Danbury in the Queen Charlotte spinoff.

“I think there’s an element of Lady Danbury where I think she’s one of those people who is her own creation,” Andoh told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think her natural instinct would be quiet and quite shy. We heard her say to young Simon in season 1: Sometimes when you’re that scared, you just absolutely have to push forward.”

Lady Danbury has “worked her way into a place of influence and security and fabulousness,” Andoh went on to say. “So now she’s in a place to go: I know what the rule is. I’m just going to bend it because that suits my purposes.”

In Bridgerton Season 2, Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) share the screen several times, including after Edwina Sharma’s (Charitha Chandran) wedding to Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) goes off the rails. During their conversations, there are hints that the two women share a deeper relationship.

“They’ve known each other a long time, these women,” Andoh said. “And I think when Lady Danbury would have been at court before, with 17-year-old Charlotte who was schlepped over from Europe to marry into this family she didn’t know from a hole in the ground … I think she would have been that person that would have shepherded the Queen, subtly, discreetly around the court when she was a new girl.”

Bridgerton Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
