BTS Are Back at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 With ‘Butter’

BTS released their second English-language single 'Butter' on May 21. The song spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 before it was dethroned by BTS' third English-language single 'Permission to Dance.' On July 26, Billboard announced that 'Butter' replaced 'Permission to Dance' at No. 1 on the chart.

For the second week in a row, BTS have replaced themselves at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. After spending seven weeks at No. 1 with “Butter,” the septet’s song “Permission to Dance” debuted at No. 1 on the chart on July 19. Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook of BTS dethroned their own song once again when “Butter” re-peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 on July 26.

BTS’ songs ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance’ switched places on the Billboard Hot 100

When “Permission to Dance” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Butter” dropped to No. 7 on the chart. In the new chart ranking from July 26, “Butter” replaced “Permission to Dance” at No. 1, and “Permission to Dance” fell to No. 7, the spot “Butter” held the previous week.

According to Billboard, sales of “Butter” increased “by 132% to 115,600 sold from 49,800, good for the Hot 100’s top Sales Gainer award.”

Billboard also reports that, “A week after ‘Permission to Dance’ opened with 140,100 downloads sold (via its original and instrumental digital versions, each on sale for 69 cents), following its July 9 release, it drops by 39% to 85,000 in the week ending July 22 (encompassing those two digital versions, plus an ‘alternate single cover’ option released in the group’s webstore the last day of the tracking week, also for 69 cents).”

BTS set a new record when ‘Butter’ re-peaked

BTS have had five songs reach No. 1 on the Hot 100: “Dynamite,” “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” and “Permission to Dance.” So far, “Butter” is the band’s most successful song on the chart and it has spent eight non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to Billboard, the song’s return to No. 1 ties it “for the chart’s longest command of 2021, first logged by Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ in January-March.”

The Billboard report also states that with “Butter” replacing “Permission to Dance” at No. 1, “BTS is the first act to displace itself at No. 1 with a new leader and then send the previous No. 1 back to the summit with no other acts holding the top spot in between.”

‘Butter’ is the band’s second English-language single

BTS released their first English-language single “Dynamite” in August 2020. The song spent three non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 after debuting in the top spot. The septet also received a Grammy Awards nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the song.

“Butter” was released on May 21, and the English-language single has long surpassed the success BTS achieved with “Dynamite.” “Permission to Dance” is BTS’ third English-language song, and the band dropped the song on July 9.
