BTS keep making history with “Butter.” On June 28, Billboard announced that “Butter” has remained at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fifth week in a row. The song is BTS’ second English-language single, and it is shaping up to be BTS’ biggest song of their career in the U.S.
Sales for BTS’ song ‘Butter’ are still strong five weeks in
BTS released “Butter” on May 21. The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook’s fourth No. 1 hit on the chart. While “Butter” has millions of streams each week, the song’s digital sales and radio audience impressions have remained particularly steady.
According to Billboard, the new BTS single “drew 12.4 million U.S. streams, down 1%, and sold 128,400 downloads, up 15%, in the week ending June 24, according to MRC Data. It also attracted 27.6 million radio airplay audience impressions, up 6%, in the week ending June 27” in its fifth week.
Billboard also reported BTS’ strong sales with “Butter,” writing, “Notably, ‘Butter’ has sold at least 100,000 in each of its first five weeks (128,400, after 111,400, 138,400, 140,200 and, in its debut week, 242,800).”
The report continues, “It’s the first song to link such a streak since Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s ‘Despacito,’ featuring Justin Bieber, cleared 100,000 in 12 consecutive weeks in May-August 2017. ‘Butter’ is the first song to sell more than 100,000 in each of its first five weeks of release since Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You,’ which did so in its first five frames in March-April 2017.”
‘Butter’ is the 54th song to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100
BTS achieved their first No. 1 on the Hot 100 with “Dynamite,” their first English-language single. In 2020, the septet also reached No. 1 with the songs “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo and “Life Goes On.”
In addition to being BTS’ fourth song to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Butter” is also the 54th song in history to debut at No. 1. According to Billboard, “‘Butter’ is just the 11th to spend at least its first five weeks on the chart at the summit.”
Billboard’s report from June 28 states that “Only one song by a group has topped the Hot 100 for more weeks from its debut than ‘Butter’: Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s ‘One Sweet Day,’ which spent its first 16 weeks on the chart at No. 1 in 1995-96, a record reign from a song’s entrance among all titles.”
BTS will release a ‘Butter’ CD on July 9
One can expect BTS’ chart domination with “Butter” to continue well into the summer because soon physical CDs of “Butter” will be available for fans to purchase. The CDs will be released on July 9, and the CD of “Butter” will also include an additional song.
There are two different versions of the “Butter” CD, and each version seemingly references lyrics to BTS’ 2016 single “Blood Sweat & Tears.” The Cream version of the “Butter” CD has yellow packaging, and the Peaches version has an orange cover.
