BTS: ‘Butter’ Tops the Billboard Hot 100 for 2nd Consecutive Week

On May 21, BTS released their new English-language single 'Butter.' The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming BTS' fourth No. 1 hit on the Billboard chart. On June 7, Billboard announced that 'Butter' remained at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart for a second consecutive week. While sales decreased some for the song, "Butter" earned more radio impressions in its second week.

On June 7, Billboard announced the new rankings for the Billboard Hot 100. For the second week in a row, BTS reached the No. 1 spot on the chart with their new single “Butter.” The song is BTS’ second English-language single, and Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook released the song on May 21.

BTS’ new song ‘Butter’ remained at No. 1 on the Hot 100

Billboard announced that “Butter” debuted on the Hot 100 on June 1. With a second week at the top of the chart, sales for the song remained strong and the single saw an increase in radio impressions.

According to Billboard, the song “drew 19.1 million U.S. streams, down 41%, and sold 140,200 downloads, down 42%, in the week ending June 3, according to MRC Data. It also attracted 22.4 million radio airplay audience impressions, up 24%, in the week ending June 6.”

Billboard also reports that “‘Butter’ is the 23rd title to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and post a second consecutive week on top, among 54 total No. 1 arrivals, making for a 43% second-week success rate.”

The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100

BTS have four songs that have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100: “Dynamite,” “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, “Life Goes On,” and “Butter.” When “Butter” debuted at No. 1 on the chart, “it became the 1,125th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s 62-year history, and the 54th to enter on top,” according to Billboard.

On June 1, Billboard reported that in its first week, BTS’ new single “drew 32.2 million U.S. streams and sold 242,800 downloads in the week ending May 27, according to MRC Data. It also attracted 18.1 million radio airplay audience impressions in the week ending May 30.”

After “Butter” debuted at No. 1, BTS issued a statement in a press release, saying:

“We released ‘Butter’ to bring a fun song that anyone can enjoy. We’re happy and honored that the song reached No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 again. We wouldn’t have gotten our fourth chart topping song without everyone’s love and support. Thank you for enjoying ‘Butter’ and we will keep working hard to deliver refreshing and passionate music.”

“Butter” debuting at No. 1 came as no surprise to anyone paying attention. Within its first 24 hours, the single broke multiple records. According to a press release, the “Butter” music video premiered with 3.9 million concurrent viewers, becoming the biggest music video premiere on YouTube.

The press release also shared that the “Butter” music video achieved 108.2 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the most-viewed YouTube video within its first 24 hours. According to the press release, “Butter” earned 20.9 million unfiltered global streams in its first day, the most first-day streams of any song in Spotify history.

What is next for BTS?

Currently, BTS and ARMY are in the midst of BTS FESTA, an annual event that celebrates BTS’ debut date. BTS FESTA always occurs over the course of two weeks in June, and each year the band releases new photos, videos, and music for fans to enjoy.
