V broke BTS’s own record with ‘Sweet Night’

With their new album Map of the Soul: 7, BTS broke multiple records. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the group’s fourth No. 1 album in less than two years. “ON,” the lead single from the album, reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, BTS’s highest-ranking on the chart to date.

With “Black Swan,” BTS became the artist with the most iTunes No. 1s in history. However, this record was broken by V after “Sweet Night” reached No. 1 on iTunes in 105 countries. V wrote “Sweet Night,” and the song was featured in the Itaewon Class OST.

BTS fans congratulated V

Before “Sweet Night” dropped in March 2020, V and RM held a VLIVE livestream. During the VLIVE, V told fans that he did not want to worry about chart rankings and he wanted fans to use the song to heal. Flash forward a few months, and V has broken multiple records with “Sweet Night,” prompting BTS fans to congratulate him.

“Before sweet night release Taehyung said he dont mind about charts as long as people get healed through his music. Now look at him breaking records left and right. This what happens when you only have kindness in your heart. He truly deserves everything,” a fan tweeted.

“Kim Taehyung now holds the title of the FIRST and ONLY Artist in the world to have the most iTunes #1s for a song with Sweet Night in 105 countries. He broke the record held by his own group @BTS_twt with his self composed OST. Congratulations Taehyung #TopGlobalArtistV,” wrote a Twitter user.

“Before Sweet Night was released, Taehyung said he didn’t care how well it did on the charts. He just wanted ARMYs to love it. A few months on, he’s broken so many records with such a beautiful song. He deserves this so much & I couldn’t be any prouder! @BTS_twt#FirstSoloistV,” one ARMY tweeted.

This is not the only iTunes record V broke

In May 2020, V broke another iTunes record with “Sweet Night.” Previously, PSY held the record for the Korean soloist with the most No. 1s on iTunes. PSY released his song “Gangnam Style” in 2012 and it became a hit around the world. After its release, “Gangnam Style” reached No. 1 on iTunes in 86 countries, making PSY the Korean soloist with the most iTunes No. 1s.

V broke the record eight years later when “Sweet Night” reached No. 1 in 87 countries on May 24, 2020. Now, V is the Korean soloist with the most No. 1s on iTunes, and he is the only artist in history to have a song reach No. 1 on iTunes in 105 countries.
