Writer/director Ron Shelton explores a story set in Durham, North Carolina. The Bulls minor league baseball team doesn’t have a whole lot going for it. However, some of the players would argue that the presence of the beautiful woman named Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) is a huge positive. Every season, she selects a new team member with who she plans to have a fling. However, this year is different.

Bull Durham sees Annie’s sudden interest in a new recruit named Ebby Calvin Laloosh (Tim Robbins), who soon goes by the name “Nuke,” and Crash Davis (Costner). The two male players initially don’t get along, although they soon must learn to work together. They prove to be an efficient team, as Crash teaches Nuke how to become a better pitcher and how to follow the catcher’s lead. Crash and Nuke begin to learn how to achieve true happiness.

Kevin Costner would return for a sequel under 1 specific circumstance

The Dan Patrick Show interviewed Costner about a potential Bull Durham sequel. He would consider returning to play Crash, although it would have to be under very certain circumstances. Shelton’s continued involvement is necessary for the story. Additionally, Costner would need to think that the story makes sense to continue.

“I could if Ron [Shelton] wrapped his arms around it and got it to that point where he thought it was good and I thought it was good … I’ll do a sequel, it hasn’t been a part of my career makeup but … “

Costner further explained that many modern sequels to incredible movies often fall short. He wouldn’t want Bull Durham to be a cash grab and would need for it to work under the right conditions. Costner believes that Shelton’s involvement in a good script is of the utmost importance.
