Chicago Fire Season 10 returns in January 2022, and fans can’t wait to see what’s in store for the cast members moving forward. In 2021, two notable Chicago Fire cast members left the show completely. And we anticipate one cast member having a much larger role moving forward, as she was promoted to series regular in season 10.

‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10 saw major cast changes in 2021

Chicago Fire Season 10 ended in 2021 with a major cliffhanger. Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd reunite in the last few minutes of episode 9, and Jason Pelham now has a more permanent position in the firehouse. Prior to episode 9, fans saw a few cast changes, though. And one of the cast changes shocked and saddened many of the fans who watched the series through the years.

Distractify reminds us Adriyan Rae, who played paramedic Gianna Mackey, left Chicago Fire Season 10 at the beginning of the season. She served as a paramedic in Firehouse 51 before receiving another offer elsewhere that would further her career. Ultimately, Mackey left the firehouse. Showrunner Derek Haas said Rae chose to leave the show for “private reasons.” On Instagram, Rae said she didn’t expect to leave the show, either.

The next major cast change came with Jesse Spencer. Spencer played Matt Casey and stuck with the show since conception. In Chicago Fire Season 10, Matt Casey planned to move to the West Coast to help care for two kids who needed a guardian. This led him to leave the firehouse behind.

Is Matt Casey leaving ‘Chicago Fire’ for good? Fans hope to see Jesse Spencer return

We don’t expect to see Adriyan Rae return as Gianna Mackey moving forward. But is Matt Casey leaving Chicago Fire forever? Jesse Spencer answered questions about his departure. It seems the actor wants to focus on his family and other personal endeavors, but he might return in the future.

“You know, here’s the thing — I never try to predict what’s going to happen production-wise, but we’re in the camp of whenever Jesse [Spencer] wants to come do an episode with us, we will move mountains and earth to make that happen,” Derek Haas told Us Weekly. “We’ve been talking. We’ve got some ideas of what that would be. I’d say you hit the nail on the head of what some of those moments might be.”

Fans hoped to see Matt Casey return in the Chicago Fire Season 10 fall finale, but he didn’t. We did see the return of Stella Kidd, though, which certainly pleased viewers.

Hanako Greensmith was promoted in 2021 — and we expect to see more of her as Violet Mikami

With the Chicago Fire cast changes in 2021, we expect to see a lot more of Violet Mikami, played by Hanako Greensmith, in 2022. Production promoted Greensmith to a series regular in 2021.

“It’s been super exciting, and it’s been wonderfully comfortable,” Greensmith told Fangirlish regarding her promotion. “I’m so familiar with everybody already,” she continued, so “it’s been really great to kind of just dive in and get to explore more of what the writers are planning for Violet, and for the group dynamics.”

Greensmith noted she hopes to see Mikami become more “openly vulnerable” over time. Given what fans saw in Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 9, it seems possible a Blake Gallo/Violet Mikami love story could happen. Fans will have to wait and see.

Chicago Fire Season 10 returns Jan. 5, 2022, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
