The Chicago P.D. Season 9 fall finale featured plenty of Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton. The couple eloped and secretly tied the knot without telling anyone else in the Intelligence Unit. In past seasons, fans saw Halstead and Upton bump heads over a number of situations. And Upton was seriously injured during a New Year’s Eve party.

Chicago P.D. Season 5 Episode 18, “Ghosts,” gave viewers a glimpse into Upton’s dark past. According to One Chicago Center, a drug bust brings Ron Booth into the spotlight as a prime suspect of illegal activity. Hailey Upton knows Booth from her past, and she goes undercover to get closer to him.

As the episode progresses, characters continue to reference an event that happened at a New Year’s Eve party. Jay Halstead grows suspicious of Upton, too, and eventually approaches her with photos. The photos show Upton beaten on New Year’s Eve.

Finally, the truth comes out. Upton admits Booth attempted to rape her in the past, but she was able to flee. Her partner at the time took her to the hospital. This leads Halstead to wonder if she should continue with the undercover operation, but Upton convinces him they need to continue.

As Chicago P.D. Season 5 Episode 18 progresses, the situation for both Hailey Upton and Jay Halstead gets more dangerous. Ron Booth knows Upton by her undercover name, “Kelly,” and Halstead also goes undercover as “Ryan.” Booth seems possessive of “Kelly,” and this leads him to attack “Ryan” while asking what their relationship was like. Hank Voight ultimately calls off the undercover plot, but Upton presses on against orders, resulting in conflict with Halstead.

Halstead and Upton engage in a verbal fight, as he doesn’t know if he can trust her to continue with the mission safely. But Halstead gives in and continues to help Upton against his better judgment. Upton and Booth get into a physical fight, and Upton wants Booth to confess to killing her partner of the past. While she wants to shoot him, Halstead begs her to rethink what she’s doing. Upton chooses to let Booth live.

While Halstead and Upton have their moments of strife in the episode, Halstead tells Upton he won’t leave her side after everything that occurred with Booth.

Fans want to know if Hailey Upton’s leaving Chicago P.D. Season 9 after everything that happened with Walton. While she and Jay Halstead could get a happy ending and leave the Intelligence Unit together, it sounds like actor Tracy Spiridakos isn’t going anywhere.
