Chicago P.D. is one of the hottest shows on television, with legions of fans tuning into the police procedural drama week after week. Lately, on the heels of a season finale that has everyone talking, many viewers are taking to the internet to discuss what the upcoming ninth season will hold for all of their favorite characters. In particular, the fate of beloved character Kim Burgess is up in the air, and many are wondering whether Burgess will even be returning for the ninth season of Chicago P.D

The season eight finale of ‘Chicago P.D’ was full of drama

The season eight finale held a lot of surprises for fans of the hit show. It was the culmination of months of intense character development and complicated storylines that dealt with serious issues such as police reform and brutality within the system. Still, many viewers couldn’t have expected the sudden violence that erupted in the finale episode, leaving several people dead and many more in uncertain situations.

Kim Burgess, played by actress Marina Squerciati, has been a mainstay in Chicago P.D. since 2014. Burgess is a character who is able to maintain her positive attitude and sense of camaraderie, even in very difficult situations.

She’s also fiercely dedicated to her career, starting out as a flight attendant before joining the CPD Academy. In spite of her loyalty to her job and to follow the rules, she has also shown a willingness to bend them on occasion, when it comes to doing what’s best for people.

Through every trial, Burgess has remained a constant in the series — but the events of the season eight finale will undoubtedly challenge her, and some fans are even wondering if the character can survive.

Fans watched as Burgess encountered a dangerous crime boss in the season eight finale of Chicago P.D. She was left with several bullet wounds, and for a while, it seemed as though she was in real danger of dying. Still, Burgess managed to pull through by making a quick tourniquet and stopping the flow of blood. Eventually, Burgess is located by paramedics, alive, but badly wounded.

In the final minutes of the episode, fans are left in the dark as to how Burgess will recover from the attack — and if she will recover at all. Marina Squerciati herself has addressed the finale episode as “insane,” and her words, combined with several other clues, has fans wondering if the actress is planning on moving on from her role in Chicago P.D

Is Marina Squerciati leaving ‘Chicago P.D.’?

Several times throughout season eight, Burgess has talked about the difficulties of being a working mother. Some fans are taking her struggles as clues that showrunners will soon be writing Burgess off the show entirely. However, it seems unlikely that Marina Squerciati will be stepping away — at least for the foreseeable future. In fact, Squerciati has talked recently about the upcoming ninth season, saying that the show will be “quite different” when it returns in the fall.

Additionally, the showrunner for the Chicago franchise, Dick Wolf, has shown a tendency to try to keep his actors locked into longer contracts. With the news that Chicago P.D. has been renewed for at least three more seasons, it seems likely that fans will be able to enjoy much more from Kim Burgess over the next few years.
