Chicago P.D. Season 9 continues to feature Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek’s confusing relationship. Burgess and Ruzek seem like the perfect pair, and their on-again, off-again relationship has fans wondering what’s next for them. Additionally, it seems Ruzek is experiencing a number of conflicting emotions in the recent season. So, is Adam Ruzek leaving the show? Here’s what we know based on what actor Patrick John Flueger said.

Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess have a long history together — and whether they’re dating or not, they clearly have each other’s best interests in mind. In Chicago P.D. Season 8, Burgess was shot twice by Roy Walton, and she nearly died from the attack. In the Chicago P.D. Season 9 premiere, we see Ruzek rushing to the hospital to check on Burgess. And he also does his best to care for Burgess’s daughter, Makayla, while Burgess recovered.

“Ruzek is really maturing,” Burgess actor Marina Squerciati told TVLine. “When our engagement [ended], a lot of reporters were like, ‘When is he going to mature and be the person you need him to be?’ I think that’s what we’re seeing, him becoming this family man, and it’s really great.” She then added Burgess and Ruzek’s current relationship makes them more like “roommates” than lovers, as he helps raise Makayla as well.

While Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess’s storyline continues to progress, some fans are concerned Adam Ruzek may be leaving Chicago P.D. Could the cop really consider ditching the Intelligence Unit and moving on to something new? Actor Patrick John Flueger spoke to Hello! about Ruzek in Chicago P.D. Season 9 — and he may have given a clue regarding where the cop’s headed.

“Ruzek has more to live for, more responsibilities and that’s more affecting him,” Flueger shared. “Ruzek really wants to step up and he’s realizing that being in the police isn’t all there is. That was a big part of his life and he wanted to succeed in the job. Every time he jumps out of the car he is doing the best by the people he is trying to protect. But I think he is finally taking a step back — especially after what happened to Kim and him stepping up with Makayla. He sees what is important now.”

With that said, it doesn’t look like Flueger has any other projects lined up that will interfere with Chicago P.D. This is a good indicator that even if Ruzek leaves the Intelligence Unit, fans will still get to follow his story. It seems Flueger will stay with the show, though his character may go through a number of changes.

If Adam Ruzek remains on Chicago P.D. Season 9, what does this mean for his relationship with Kim Burgess? Will Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek ultimately get back together and rekindle their romance? Fans would love to see it, but Squerciati told TVLine she has no idea if this is in the works. Additionally, she hinted their relationship could “crumble” as the season progresses.

“There are going to be some tests with Makayla coming up,” she told TVLine. “So far, they’ve been building, and I think something might crumble pretty soon.”

Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
