NBC’s Chicago P.D. Season 9 continues to explore interpersonal relationships and difficult work circumstances for the Intelligence Unit. So far, fans have seen Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton rectify their relationship. And they’ve also seen new developments for Hank Voight, Kim Burgess, Adam Ruzek, and Kevin Atwater. It seems the switch-up in showrunners may have led to new plots viewers didn’t see coming.

Chicago P.D. Season 9 is currently led by showrunner Gwen Sigan. Deadline reports Sigan worked as a writer and executive producer for the show prior to her promotion, and back in October 2021, word got out that she would now run the show. Prior to Sigan, Rick Eid ran Chicago P.D.

“From her first day on the job at Chicago P.D., she captured the characters’ voices and flawlessly weaved them into thrilling cases with unexpected character turns,” Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television, said. “We are grateful to have her at the helm of this venerable Wolf series, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Sigan also spoke to Wolf Entertainment about how she planned out the present season. She noted her team begins with “big, overarching themes” for the characters, and they go from there. “Coming in when I came in, the transition was really smooth because we already had the themes and the staff set,” she shared. “There was already momentum going, so it was a matter of keeping that moving.”

Midway through Chicago P.D. Season 9, fans noticed notable shifts in some characters and storylines. CinemaBlend reminds us that Jay Halstead and Hank Voight’s relationship has completely changed. After they foiled the FBI’s plan to put Voight away for killing Roy Walton, Voight’s taken on a different role with Halstead. This dynamic shift gives Halstead more authority over Voight than fans ever thought possible.

Additionally, there was a notable shift between Halstead and Hailey Upton. The two went from barely making their engagement work to eloping.

Kevin Atwater actor LaRoyce Hawkins told CinemaBlend that he’s “grateful” for the direction Gwen Sigan is taking his character, too. Ultimately, Atwater hopes the showrunners choose to promote him to detective. It seems Sigan’s direction might take the character to new heights.

“To be honest with you, what I’m grateful for, is [Chicago P.D. writer] Ike Smith, who kind of accepted these ideas, grateful for Gwen Sigan for allowing us to really take Atwater’s journey into an element that it feels good to really play with,” he told the publication.
