'Chicago P.D.' Season 9 is coming soon, and fans can't wait to see which cast members are slated to return. Here's who's rumored to come back, plus, a surprising villain from the past may reappear in the One Chicago universe -- but not in a way anyone expects.

Fans of NBC’s One Chicago shows can’t wait for the return of Chicago P.D. The show started in 2014 and centers around the Intelligence Unit and the officers working in the Chicago Police Department. With Chicago P.D. Season 9 premiering in early fall 2021, fans want to know who they can expect to see. Here’s who’s rumored to return in the Chicago P.D. Season 9 cast, plus, a surprise villain will reenter the franchise in a new way.

[Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for Chicago P.D. Season 8 finale.]

NBC’s One Chicago is ramping up with season premieres in September 2021

September 2021 is going to be a big month for NBC’s One Chicago shows. Chicago P.D. Season 9 premieres Sept. 22, 2021, at 10 p.m. ET, according to NBC. Chicago Fire premieres the same night but one hour earlier at 9 p.m. ET. And Chicago Med premieres first on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.

Fans have high expectations for the new season of P.D. The season 8 finale was one of the most intense the show’s ever had. FanSided reminds fans the season 8 finale began with Officer Kim Burgess missing after getting abducted in the previous episode, and the Intelligence Unit had to find her before it was too late. Unfortunately for Burgess, her abductor ended up shooting her once his partner arrived at the scene.

Thankfully, fans saw Burgess live through the attack, and she was seemingly able to get to relative safety before passing out. Of course, we won’t know exactly how Burgess fairs until season 9 begins.

Which fan-favorite characters will return in the Chicago P.D. Season 9 cast? It seems the core group of officers and Intelligence Unit specialists will be back on the scene, according to NBC.

Jason Beghe returns as Sergeant Hank Voight, as is expected. Lisseth Chavez will come back as Officer Vanessa Rojas, Patrick John Flueger returns as Officer Adam Ruzek, LaRoyce Hawkins makes his way back as Officer Kevin Atwater, Amy Morton returns as Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt, Jesse Lee Soffer returns as Detective Jay Halstead, and Tracy Spiridakos is back on the scene as Detective Hailey Upton.

It seems Kim Burgess likely makes it through the ordeal of the season 8 final, too. NBC lists Marina Squerciati as a returning actor for Burgess.

It looks like fans want to see more friendships evolve within the core group of characters, too. According to FanSided, some fans hope to see more “friendship scenes,” particularly between Upton and Burgess as well as Halstead and Burgess.

Fans are sure to see a few new faces join the Chicago P.D. Season 9 cast — and perhaps a few old faces will rejoin as well. Rumors suggest Denny Woods, a villain from past seasons of the show, may reemerge in the One Chicago franchise. But likely not in the way fans expect.

Denny Woods (Mykelti Williamson) was first introduced in season 4, according to FanSided. He’s the ex-partner of Voight from decades prior, though they had a severe falling out. In season 5, Woods was arrested — and that’s the last fans saw of him.

The publication notes Williamson, the actor who portrayed Woods, will now direct an episode of Chicago Med. While Williamson could technically bring Woods back in the new season of P.D., it seems the actor prefers life on the other side of the camera for now. Prior to the new episode, Williamson directed three other Med episodes.
