Some fans wondered if Hank Voight is a bad cop after what took place at the end of Chicago P.D. Season 8. During the season 8 finale, Hailey Upton killed Roy, the attacker who shot Kim Burgess twice in the stomach, during an altercation between Roy and Voight. Upton and Voight decided to keep Roy’s death a secret, and Voight discarded the body. Now, in Chicago P.D. Season 9, fans watch as the secret eats away at Upton and affects her relationship with Jay Halstead.

Halstead eventually seeks out the truth regarding what’s going on with Upton after he witnesses her unable to eat and sleep. After tracking Voight down one night, Voight tells Halstead what went down. Voight then encourages Halstead to help Upton through this tough time. In response, Halstead hits Voight and angrily heads home to address the situation with Upton.

The promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 7 shows a major confrontation between Hank Voight and Jay Halstead. The start of the promo shows Trudy Platt privately addressing Voight. “I can’t help but notice the tension in your unit,” she tells him. The scene then cuts to Halstead and Voight speaking.

“What do you want from me?” Voight asks Halstead.

“I don’t trust you,” Halstead responds.

“I can’t have you in my unit if you don’t trust me,” Voight fires back.

Jason Beghe spoke to TV Insider regarding what’s to come in episode 7. He notes the entire unit is “out of sync” with each other, and it’s particularly clear there’s a build-up of frustrations between Voight and Halstead that’s ready to explode.

“If you look at [the team] as a family and Voight as the father — the responsible party — his family is unhappy and dangerously out of sync,” Beghe said. “It doesn’t feel like home anymore.”

Not only is Halstead upset with Voight, but he’s also angry with Upton for keeping a major secret from him. Roy’s death could have dire consequences for Upton’s job. And, of course, the entire situation may put their engagement in jeopardy.

Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton’s future remains uncertain in Chicago P.D. Season 9. Halstead accepted Upton’s proposal during the season premiere, but now that the truth about Roy’s come out, fans grow concerned they’ll call their engagement off. Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer also hinted there’s trouble ahead for the couple.

Soffer talked to One Chicago Center about Halstead consulting his brother, Will, about being the Best Man in the wedding. “I think it’s going to be so bumpy at first, that I don’t foresee Will needing to help Jay with his Best Man’s speech,” Soffer hinted. “If Will is involved, then that would mean that everything is going well and is probably running smoothly for Jay because maybe the marriage is really going to happen.”

Chicago P.D. Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
