Fans watching NBC’s Chicago P.D. Season 9 can’t wait to see more of Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek’s relationship. The two sustained a romance in the past, and they now seem to co-parent Burgess’s daughter, Makayla. While fans hoped they would officially get back together in 2022, it seems that might not be the case. In the new promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10, Burgess suggests to Ruzek he should consider dating someone else.

Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek have a long on-again, off-again relationship history — and fans will see even more of their confusing romance in Chicago P.D. Season 9. Their relationship stems all the way back to season 1. They shared a kiss when they were just friends — and that kiss turned into so much more later on. Additionally, the kiss happened when Ruzek was engaged to someone else at the time.

By season 2, Ruzek and Burgess pursued a relationship and got engaged. But Burgess eventually calls off the engagement after Ruzek pushed back their wedding. The couple then goes through hard times through seasons 4 and 5 of the show, and they break up. By season 7, Burgess finds out she’s pregnant with Ruzek’s child. She notes she intends to keep the baby with or without a relationship with Ruzek. She later miscarries.

Now, in season 9, Burgess and Ruzek remain close, but they aren’t officially together anymore. Ruzek helped Burgess during season 9 after she was shot twice by Roy Walton in season 8.

The ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9 Episode 10 promo shows Kim Burgess telling Adam Ruzek to meet someone new

A new promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10 suggests the next episode of the show will focus on Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek’s relationship. And it seems Burgess nudges Ruzek to meet other women and move on.

“I think it would be better if we had more boundaries with Makayla,” Burgess tells Ruzek at the beginning of the promo. “I’m only being realistic.”

She then states, “We’re not dating. You could meet someone.”

“I’m just gonna leave then?” Ruzek counters.

“That’s not what I’m saying,” Burgess interrupts.

Finally, the promo ends with asking Burgess, “Are you guys gonna leave me?”

“I’m trying to protect her,” Burgess says of Makayla.

With Makayla getting older and Ruzek caring for the child while Burgess was in the hospital during the beginning of Chicago P.D. Season 9, it seems like Burgess is getting nervous about Ruzek’s involvement with the little girl. On the other hand, Ruzek has a great relationship with both Burgess and Makayla and likely considers Makayla to be a part of his family. Hopefully, the exes can figure out a system that works for everyone.

Kim Burgess actor Marina Squerciati noted in a past interview that she wants Burgess to experience romance outside of what she had with Adam Ruzek.

“I’d kind of like someone else to come along, that one of them gets jealous and realizes what they’re missing,” she told TVLine.

On the other hand, she also mentioned how Ruzek is “really maturing” throughout Chicago P.D. Season 9, so the couple still has potential.

“When our engagement [ended], a lot of reporters were like, ‘When is he going to mature and be the person you need him to be?’” Squerciati added. “I think that’s what we’re seeing, him becoming this family man, and it’s really great.”

Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10 airs Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
