Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10 is finally here, and NBC’s One Chicago fans can anticipate confrontation between Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek. Burgess and Ruzek have a complicated relationship history. While they no longer officially date, they still treat each other like family — and Ruzek cares for Burgess’s daughter Makayla, often. According to the showrunner, fans will see a lot more of Burgess and Ruzek moving forward this season, too.

The promo for Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10 shows the episode will center around Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek. Earlier in the season, Burgess was recovering from two gunshot wounds to the abdomen — and Ruzek helped care for Makayla while Burgess stayed in the hospital. Now, it seems like Burgess is creating new boundaries for Ruzek and Makayla in order to protect her daughter.

“I think it would be better if we had more boundaries with Makayla,” Burgess explains to Ruzek in the promo. “I’m only being realistic. … We’re not dating. You could meet someone.”

Ruzek doesn’t seem happy with this proposal, though. He finally asks Burgess if she plans on leaving with Makayla so he can’t be a part of the little girl’s life anymore. “I’m trying to protect her,” Burgess answers.

The showrunner promises more exploration of Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek as the season progresses

Chicago P.D. Season 9 showrunner Gwen Sigan spoke to TVLine about what’s next for the show. “We’ve got some really exciting Burgess/Ruzek episodes coming up,” she promised.

“They’re in such an interesting, complicated place — they’re a makeshift family, currently platonic but there’s always that chemistry there,” Sigan added. “It’s a unique relationship with no clear boundaries. The second section of this season really explores that territory. Do they need clear boundaries? Can this family function how they want it to? What does it all mean for Makayla?”

Burgess actor Marina Squerciati also suggested Makayla could “test” Burgess and Ruzek. “There are going to be some tests with Makayla coming up,” Squerciati told TVLine. “So far, they’ve been building, and I think something might crumble pretty soon.”

Do Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek end up together in the end? It seems unlikely

‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 9: Kim Burgess Tells Adam Ruzek to Date Someone New in Episode 10

While Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek clearly go through a rough patch in Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10, do they end up together in the end? The exes have attempted to make their relationship work a number of times in the past, but it never seems to last. Rather than Burgess and Ruzek continuing to pursue a romance, it seems more likely they’ll go their separate ways.

Squerciati mentioned in another interview she’d love to see Burgess or Ruzek mix it up and find a new romantic partner. “I’d kind of like someone else to come along, that one of them gets jealous and realizes what they’re missing,” she told TVLine.

With that said, Squerciati also mentioned she believes Ruzek and Burgess are the “eternal couple.” “They probably will get married in season 15, but who knows?” she told TV Insider. “They can’t seem to get their stuff together.”

Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 10 airs Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022, at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
