Christina Ricci and Johnny Depp have known each other for years. The two met way back in the day and have had the pleasure of working alongside each other in not one but two big-screen films.

Though getting to share the spotlight with Depp was enjoyable for Ricci, it turns out that playing his love interest and performing risqué scenes with him felt “weird” to her. Read on below to find out why.

Johnny Depp first met Christina Ricci when she was 9-years-old

As we mentioned before, Ricci and Depp go way back.

The two first met in 1990 when Ricci was just 9-years-old. At the time, the young actor was starring in the family-comedy film Mermaids, which allowed her to rub elbows with the likes of Cher and Winona Ryder.

While on set, Ricci had come across Depp, who often paid Ryder a visit. As many might recall, Ryder and Depp were seriously dating at that time and were considered the ultimate relationship goals.

The pair had fallen for each other fast and were so in love that Depp had “Winona Forever” tattooed on his right arm.

Unfortunately, the couple’s relationship didn’t last as they called it quits in 1993 due to the media constantly interfering in their relationship.

Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci first worked together in 1999

Nearly a decade after Depp first met Ricci, the two crossed paths on another movie set. But this time, it was a film they were both working on.

In 1999, Ricci and Depp were cast as the leads in Tim Burton’s horror flick Sleepy Hollow.

The supernatural film tells the story of Police Detective Ichabod Crane (Depp), who is sent from New York City to a small town called Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of murders. During his investigation, Crane meets and falls in love with the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel (Ricci), who helps him uncover the town’s secrets and the mystery behind the Headless Horseman (played by Christopher Walken).

The following year, Depp and Ricci were cast as love interests again in the drama film, The Man Who Cried. But unlike Sleepy Hollow, The Man Who Cried required the two actors to get intimate in what would be Ricci’s first-ever sex scene.

Christina Ricci and Johnny Depp played lovers in ‘The Man Who Cried’… and it was pretty weird

Seeing as Ricci had never taken on intimate roles before, she was riddled with nerves when it came time to perform a romantic scene with Depp in The Man Who Cried

Since the Casper star looked at Depp more like a brother, sharing an on-screen kiss with him in the film felt “weird” to her.

“This love relationship is intense and strange,” Ricci said at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, per NickiSwift. “I’ve known Johnny so long, he’s protective of me as an older brother and it’s weird to think of having sex with him.”

But despite the awkwardness of it all, Ricci was able to find humor in her sex scene with Depp.

“It was a little weird,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2001. “Anytime you’re rooting around like two pigs in front of 20 men or women on a set, it’s kind of bizarre, especially with someone you met when you were 9 and he was 27. But we get along so well that we could both laugh it off and say, ‘This is really irritating.”‘
