Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin also commented on Powell’s death, according to The New York Times. “I lost a tremendous personal friend and mentor,” he stated. “He always made time for me, and I could always go to him for tough issues. I feel as if I have a hole in my heart.”

Al Sharpton, a former candidate for presidency for the Democrats and someone who opposed the Iraq War, also noted the immense respect he had for Powell. “Though we disagreed on many issues, I always respected him and was proud of his achievements,” Sharpton added. “When he and I ran into each other and conversed, I always left feeling he was a sincere and committed man to what he believed in.”
