Fans have been waiting for years for a glimmer of hope that they would be seeing Keanu Reeves as John Constantine again. Although there have been rumors about it happening for a number of years, it looks like Constantine 2 could seriously be a go according to one of the stars from the original movie.

Rumors of ‘Constantine 2’ have been around for years

Constantine, which came out in 2005, is based on the Hellblazer comics by DC. In the movie, John Constantine is a demonologist that fights and exercises demons as the street-smart chain-smoking main character. He seems to know anything and everything having to do with the occult, but his attitude makes him a little rough around the edges. The character also appeared in NBC’s 2014 series by the same name, but it only lasted for one season though.

According to Box Office Mojo from IMDb Pro, Constantine the movie only made about $30 million on opening weekend, raking in a total of $230,884,728 altogether. The movie had a $100 million budget. Despite the fact that the movie didn’t do as well as initially expected, it still has a cult following of fans who enjoy watching the movie over and over again, us included.

A few people that worked on the first film have spoken about the possibility of a sequel in the future. In 2011, the director of the film, Francis Lawrence, told MTV News that “it would be great to figure out a sequel,” and fans would certainly agree.

“It would be great to figure out a sequel, and if we did, and we’ve been trying to figure one out, it would be great to do the really dark, scary [version],” Lawrence said. “We got caught in that weird PG-13 – R no man’s land, and we should do the hard-R scary version, which I would love to do.”

Lawrence isn’t the only person affiliated with the first movie that has spoken about a sequel. According to Deadline, producer Akiva Goldsman has said this year that they wanted to make a sequel while at the Collider Comic-Con@Home panel about making the movie.

“Boy, we wanted to make a sequel, We wanted to make a hard ‘R’ sequel; we’d probably make it tomorrow,” he said.

Keanu Reeves admitted in 2019 to wanting to play the character again

But what would a sequel be without the man who played Constantine? Reeves himself seems open to returning to play the role of John Constantine as well, and it’s something fans would love to see in the future. He admits that he’s “always wanted” to play the character once again.

“I’ve always wanted to play John Constantine again,” Reeves said in a podcast by Variety called The Big Ticket. “I just love that world, too, and I love that character. Yeah, I just had a blast playing that character and [playing] in that world.”

Peter Stormare played Lucifer in the film, and he’s taken to Instagram to say a sequel film is “in the works.” He posted an image of himself as Lucifer from the movie, with a caption that gives fans hope: “Sequel In The Works.”

He is the only person to come forward so far about working on a sequel, as no other news has surfaced yet. Fans are hoping for official news to be released, since nothing else is yet known. Obviously, this isn’t an official confirmation, but it gives us hope, considering the actor worked in the first film. Fans are now speculating what this all could mean, and if Reeves will return to play John Constantine again as he’s admitted to wanting to do.

It looks like Constantine 2 could be happening, and what would it be without Reeves back as John Constantine? We’ll have to see if any other news gets released about the possibility of a sequel to come. But for now, it gives us all some hope for the future of Constantine.
