The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial has revealed that Depp will most likely never play Jack Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Fans have shared their disappointment in this news online as many want to see him again in the role. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer may have given Depp fans a sliver of hope as he shared an update where he didn’t fully deny the possibility of Depp returning.

Johnny Depp shared that Disney dropped him from the role of Jack Sparrow in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’

Johnny Depp first played Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Based on the popular Disney attraction, the Pirates movies became one of the biggest franchises in the world and that’s partly due to Depp’s hilarious portrayal of Jack. Depp last played the role in 2017 and was set to return for a Pirates 6 but was removed by Disney.

In 2018, Depp’s ex-wife, Heard, released an op-ed in The Washington Post indirectly accusing Depp of domestic violence. Depp is currently suing Heard for defamation and during his testimony, the actor revealed that Disney severed ties with the actor before any evidence had come out. Depp felt “betrayed” and he said he wanted to give the character a “proper goodbye.”

“I didn’t quite understand how after that long relationship and quite a successful relationship, certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent… I, in fact, had been approached to take part in writing Pirates 6… my feeling was that these characters should be able to have their proper goodbye, as it were. A franchise can only last for so long, and there’s a way to end a franchise like that. And I thought that the characters deserved… to end their franchise on a very good note. I planned on continuing until it was time to stop.”

Jerry Bruckheimer says the future is not ‘decided’ in regards to Johnny Depp returning to ‘Pirates’

Bruckheimer served as the producer of all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The producer is currently busy with Top Gun: Maverick, which arrives in theaters on May 27. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Bruckheimer was asked about the future of the Pirates movies. He was asked about the possibility of Johnny Depp returning to Pirates to which he gave a very vague answer.

“Not at this point,” Bruckheimer said. “The future is yet to be decided.”

Depp appears to harbor bitter feelings toward Disney after being dropped, so it’s unclear if he would agree to come back. However, these comments indicate that the return of Captain Jack Sparrow may not be completely off the table.

With or without Depp, it appears that the franchise is still moving forward. It was announced a while back that a new Pirates movie would be coming, but it would be led by Margot Robbie. Bruckheimer was asked about this and said they are currently working on two scripts for Robbie’s Pirates movie.

“Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie,” the producer said. “We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.”

Pirates of the Caribbean is currently streaming on Disney+.
