The hit series Criminal Minds is one of those that keeps getting better through every rewatch. Fans are active on social media talking about the show, and they recently discussed the “most unrealistic thing” about the series, and it involves Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness).

Who is Penelope Garcia in ‘Criminal Minds’?

Garcia is extremely tech savvy and smart, working as the Technical Analyst assisting the Behavioral Analysis Unit in catching the unsubs countless times. She makes breaks in cases with her knowledge of computers and the Internet, all while joking and finding the lighthearted moments where she can. She’s a sensitive individual, which sometimes comes into direct conflict with the subject matter the team sees on a regular basis.

Fans weigh in on the ‘most unrealistic thing’ about the show

On August 4, 2021, a fan on Reddit posted a title, “Most unrealistic thing about Criminal Minds.” They continue: “Garcia never needs to ask how to spell any names. She picks up the phone and they tell her ‘We need everything you have on Kaileigh Yuimahaeoloysia’ and she’s just like ight??”

Fans weighed in with their own thoughts on the matter. One fan assumes Garcia would search all the different spellings of a name.

“Yeah, I’d assume she would search all known spellings anyway just in case,” they said. “Not that the show is realistic in any sense of the word.”

One fan agrees with the author of the post. “LMAO yes,” they said. “I work in a call center, and I have to constantly ask people to spell their name back to me.”

‘Imagine a scene where she finds the wrong person’

A fan mentions an example where Garcia might find the “wrong person.” “Imagine a scene where she finds the wrong person like she was supposed to find Kaileigh Jones and instead finds Caeleieeh Jones but both Kaileigh and Caeleieeh are serial killers.”

Another fan “had the same thought” before, and it makes sense others would as well. How can she know the exact spelling of the person’s name the agents are searching for?

“Lmaooo I had this same thought the other day when I was watching I’d be like ‘Ok can you spell that, real slooooowly…’”

Partial searches get brought up

However, one fan mentions, “That’s because you can use partial searches.”

But another fan commented saying that’s not the case, revealing that partial searches would bring up “hundreds of results” at times.

“Lol for one thing she doesn’t use partial searches,” they said. “She magically knows how to spell every name correctly. If she did use partial searches, some names would have hundreds of results. Funny how again she magically comes up with the correct name within seconds.”

It is an interesting thought considering Penelope Garcia is always asked to search for names on the computer, and she doesn’t need the names repeated. She seems to be able to find the named individual just fine though.
