After sitting out for most of HBO‘s Curb Your Enthusiasm last season, Richard Lewis said he plans to return for season 12 and celebrated with a trip to New York City.

Lewis dealt with a serious back injury – so painful he’d sometimes have to be wheeled on set. He regrettably had to pass on most of Curb Season 11 to endure multiple surgeries but was thrilled when he could join the cast for one episode. Now it appears Lewis is gearing up for a full season and complete return to the cast.

Lewis has been a constant on the series since it premiered in 2000, playing an exaggerated version of himself as one of Larry David’s oldest and closest friends.

Richard Lewis celebrated his return to ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Season 12

Lewis tweeted a photo of himself sitting on a bench in Central Park. “I can’t wait to start shooting Curb Your Enthusiasm 12, later this year, and celebrating with a trip back home and chilling in Central Park,” he wrote.

A return trip to New York was very appropriate because that’s where he and David met when they were kids. “We hated each other. He was an annoying, lanky, obnoxious basketball player,” Lewis told The Washington Post about David. Adding the dig, “I was a better shooter.”

David snarked, “I was a better player. I had more moves.” He added, “And put up a jump shot. And I was a much better rebounder.”

They may have had a dispute over basketball, but the young comedians re-established their friendship when they both worked the New York City comedy circuit.

Larry David confirmed ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Season 12

Lewis has loved filming the series and was upset to be sidelined last season. “For 20 years, I had the greatest comedy gig I could have ever imagined with my oldest and dearest friend LD. Honestly, I’m crushed that I won’t be part of this season,” Lewis told Variety. “For sure, I will be screaming with all the other ‘Curb’ fans when the new season starts. Hope to be there for Season 12!”

David confirmed Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 during an Emmys live panel discussion. Bob Eisen, who hosted the event, tweeted the news. “So, I was honored to emcee an @TheEmmys panel for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ tonight here in LA with most of the cast and asked Larry David the ultimate question: Will there be another season of Curb? He said yes.”

How does Larry David shoot ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’?

Filming Curb is compared to creating a jazz compilation and actor Caroline Aaron described to Showbiz Cheat Sheet how David builds a scene. Aaron confirmed that the actors work without a script, but instead receive a description of the scene. “You have these beat sheets and I think all it said was ‘They deliver a picture to Barbara that her friend had framed for her. And they notice a picture of her and her deceased husband.’ And that’s it,” she recalled. “That’s all you get. And then you go!”

The camera crew also receives no direction. “And what happens is none of the camera people know where anybody’s going,” she exclaimed. “So they’re like a jazz band. Everybody has a camera on them and they just kind of go for it.”

David decides what stays in a scene based on how hard he laughs. “If you say something that he likes, he just bursts out laughing,” Aaron said. “So what you would do is you would do the scene and then Larry would stop and then go, ‘Keep that line’ and let’s go again and keep this line and go again.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 premiere date is yet to be announced.
