Dakota Johnson’s Hollywood ‘Dynasty’ Lineage; There’s More Than Just Melanie Griffith in Her Family Tree
Dakota Johnson is such a popular actor at this point in time. She’s been in a major franchise but has such a range of genres under her belt as well. From intense horror to independent, heartfelt films, Johnson has quite the resume. Not to mention, she’s good at her craft.
With that said, she also has a very interesting lineage; she comes from a family of actors, which many people might not know the extent of. So, here are the famous people who raised her.
Johnson’s mother is Melanie Griffith, who famously starred as Tess McGill in Working Girl in the 1980s. That won her a Golden Globe award and an Academy Award nomination. Griffith did several movies and later went on make appearances in many TV shows in the 2000s.
Johnson’s first role in a film was in her mother’s film, Crazy in Alabama, which was also directed by her then-step father, Antonio Banderas. While Griffith had a starring role in the film, Johnson was just a child and played one of her kids along with her half-sister, Stella Banderas.
Don Johnson is Dakota Johnson’s father and has been acting since the late ‘60s. He appeared in several films and a ton of television shows. But he’s best known for his role as James “Sonny” Crockett in Miami Vice in the ‘80s, which won him a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination. He also most recently co-starred in Knives Out as Richard Drysdale (who married into the family through Jamie Lee Curtis’ character Linda).
Johnson and Griffith met when she was 14, got married and then divorced 6 months later, according to Yahoo. They met up again in 1989 and married a second time for about seven years, and Dakota Johnson was born in 1989.
Hedren is Dakota Johnson’s grandmother and Griffith’s mother. She was a model first, then went on to become a pretty popular actor after Alfred Hitchcock cast her in The Birds, one of his most popular horror movies. Hedren went on to star in Marnie and soap operas like The Bold and the Beautiful.
One of the more eccentric things about Hedren is that she owned a lot of big cats in the ‘60s and ‘70s, which aided in the filming of Roar, one of the most dangerous movies to film. It starred Hedren and ex-husband Noel Marshall, along with Griffith, who had to have reconstructive surgery after being mauled by one of the wild cats on set. In a recent interview with The Graham Norton Show, Johnson revealed Hedren still has around 13 or 14 big cats, but no longer has the massive compound like before.
While Antonio Banderas isn’t related to Johnson by blood, he was a “bonus dad” for the actor for almost 20 years. Banderas married Griffith in 1996 and because a stepfather to Johnson, one that she looks back on very fondly. And even though Banderas and Griffith divorced in 2015, Johnson still sees him as a father figure. She gave a very touching speech at the Hollywood Film Awards in November, and still calls him “Papi.”
“I come from a family of many a marriage and I got very lucky,” Johnson said as she presented Banderas with the award for his work in Pain and Glory. She called Banderas “one of the most influential people in my whole life.”
