Almost 30 years after Boy Meets World ended, fans still stream the show for a nostalgic feeling or when sharing the fun-loving TV series with the next generation. Cory and Shawn may have been the show’s focus. But it was Cory’s true love, Topanga Lawrence, who stole the show in many fans’ opinions. Danielle Fishel played the quirky and no-nonsense character fans (and Cory) fell in love with. She also inspired many teen girls’ hairstyle choices during the 90s. Since Topanga’s hair was a significant focus for fans, Fishel’s desire to change her hair while starring in the show inspired one Boy Meets World episode.

While we all came to know and love Danielle Fishel as Topanga on Boys Meet World, she wasn’t supposed to be a star. The producers planned for Topanga to have a one-time appearance during the series. But she quickly became a breakout star and scored a recurring role on the show during the first season. By the second season, Fishel held a starring role in Boy Meets World. She portrayed the character during the entire seven-season run of Boy Meets World.

Following the love story of Cory and Topanga only added to the daily events the teenage friends encountered from middle school through college. The two have some ups and downs but always find their way back to each other. They even got engaged at their high school graduation. Despite their struggles, the meant-to-be couple ties the knot and continues their life happily together in the spinoff series Girl Meets World

The story behind the Topanga haircutting episode

In a Boy Meets World cast reunion on Good Morning America, Fishel reveals the story behind the famous episode where Topanga cut her hair. It turns out that Fishel inspired the episode, as she had “never cut her hair since she was like three years old.”

“I was sick of having super long hair and really wanted to cut it during our hiatus,” she explained. Fishel discussed her plans with the higher-ups, who begged her not to cut it off the air. Instead, they wrote it into an episode.

The iconic moment where Topanga cuts her hair comes in the second episode of Boy Meets World Season 2, appropriately titled “Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow.” As was often done at the time, the event provides a valuable lesson for the characters.

Unfortunately, her starring role in the well-loved ’90s sitcom didn’t do much for Fishel’s acting career. She’s appeared in just a few movies in addition to a handful of TV appearances and voiceover roles. Her biggest claim to fame outside of the franchise is her satirical talk show, The Dish. But from 2013 to 2017, Fishel reprised her signature role as Topanga in Girl Meets World

Beyond her acting, Fishel continues to add to her business portfolio by starting her own hair care line. The star’s Be Free vegan hair care products are popular with Boy Meets World fans. After all, as the show proved, everyone wants Topanga’s hair.
