Actor Anne Hathaway was in the Hollywood industry for several years before playing Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. However, her starring role alongside Meryl Streep brought The Princess Diaries alum from a teen star to an A-list actor. Soon, she earned multiple awards and nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for the film Rachel Getting Married

As The Devil Wears Prada celebrates its 15th anniversary, many fans are itching to see where Andy, Miranda Priestly (Streep), and the rest of the Runway staff are today. However, Hathaway said she would consider doing a sequel to the 2006 film under one condition.

Anne Hathaway would only do a ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel with the entire original cast

Before The Devil Wears Prada, Hathaway played Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2. Although she became a Disney star through the role, the New York native wanted to branch out into more mature roles. After playing Jake Gyllenhaal’s wife in Brokeback Mountain, Hathaway set her eye on The Devil Wears Prada. In an interview with Variety, she shared that she desperately wanted to play Andy Sachs, a journalism school graduate who begrudgingly takes a job as fashion editor Miranda Priestly’s assistant. Although Hathaway wasn’t the studio’s “first choice” for Andy, she eventually won them over.

On June 30, 2006, The Devil Wears Prada premiered in movie theaters. The fictional take on the fashion magazine industry catapulted Hathaway’s career. While she’s eternally grateful for the film’s success, the actor doesn’t know if she would want a sequel. However, Hathaway would read a script for a second movie if the original cast and crew get involved.

“I’m not sure if could is the right question,” Hathaway told Variety of a possible sequel. “Should there be? I’d love to make a movie with all the people again that’s something totally different. But I think that one might have just hit the right note. It’s good to leave it as it is.”

Meryl Streep already declined on a ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel

Even though Hathaway doesn’t know if a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, the creator of the novel the movie adapted had a different take. In 2018, Laura Weisberger, who wrote The Devil Wears Prada after working as an assistant to Anna Wintour, wrote the sequel to her New York Times bestselling book, called When Life Gives You Lululemons.

Although The Devil Wears Prada’s literary sequel was successful, there haven’t been any plans on making a second film yet. Variety stated in 2016 that Streep has privately declined to play Miranda Priestly again. While the Little Women actor never shared why she wouldn’t want to revisit the character, she admitted to Entertainment Weekly that the role took an emotional toll on her.

“It was horrible!” the award-winning actor told the outlet of playing the ‘villain.’ “I was [miserable] in my trailer. I could hear them all rocking and laughing.

” I was so depressed!” she continued. “I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!’ That’s the last time I ever attempted a Method thing!”
