Debra Morgan may have died in the final season of Dexter, but that might not be the last you see of her. In October 2020, Showtime announced a 10-episode limited series revival of the show that will follow Dexter Morgan after that controversial closer. Despite his efforts to stop killing, it’s been confirmed that people will die in the revival. But instead of Harry guiding him, some fans think it’ll be Deb.

First, a recap of what happened to Deb in ‘Dexter’

Because it’s been eight years, let’s quickly go back and discuss what happened to Deb. If you recall, she had been closing in on Oliver Saxon, but when she tried to arrest him, he shot her. Doctors expected she would be fine once she had surgery, but after the procedure, she suffered a blood clot and stroke that resulted in the loss of her motor functions.

Realizing her life would never be the same, Dexter decided to pull the plug before burying her body at sea. He then fled Miami for Oregon and started a new life as a lumberjack.

Will Deb be in the new ‘Dexter’?

So far, Michael C. Hall (Dexter) is the only original actor confirmed for the revival. But showrunner Clyde Phillips has hinted that Deb could show up. “There is some flexibility for movie magic, and that’s all I can say about it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast.

Since then, rumors of her involvement have continued due in part to an alleged now-deleted Instagram post Jennifer Carpenter (Deb) shared in the same location where the revival is reportedly filming. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reached out to representatives for Carpenter for comment about her possibly appearing in the revival but did not hear back by the time of publication. However, fans are convinced she will.

“I wonder what role she will serve as the dark passenger as Harry helped Dexter to stick to the code and keep his family,” one person said under a Reddit thread about her possibly becoming Dexter’s new conscious.

“she’d basically tell him to stay away from Harrison. She will be the reason he can’t go back,” another speculated.

A third fan agreed, saying, “I thought [she] would keep him from caving and going to see Harrison, like she will keep him thinking he’s poison to the people he cares about.”

So far, there hasn’t any word on Harrison’s whereabouts, so the assumption is that he’s still in Argentina with Hannah. All we know is that Dexter has since relocated to the fictional New York town Iron Lake, where he’ll face antagonist Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), a power community leader.

“If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you,” his character description says in part (via TV Line).

When does the ‘Dexter’ revival air?

As of writing, the exact release date for the Dexter revival is unknown, but it is expected to come out in 2021. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for updates as they become available.
